Khloe Keeler Announced as Vision Maker Media's Public Media Internship Recipient
 | K. Keeler |
Lincoln, Neb.: Vision Maker Media is proud to announce Khloe Keeler (Northern Ponca/Dakota/Lakota) as this summer's Public Media Internship recipient. From a pool of college applicants, the organization selected Keeler for the 10-week paid internship. Keeler's position will be located at Vision Maker Media's offices at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln alongside Nebraska Educational Telecommunications.
Keeler was raised in California and moved to Omaha, Neb., to obtain her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Creighton University where she served as a student-body advisor working with the University's board of directors. She continued to hone her journalistic skills through various training opportunities while attending graduate school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), earning her Master of Arts degree in Journalism in May 2014. While attending UNL, she held the position of Club President for Nebraska University Students Against Modern Day Slavery (NUSAMS). She also authored a 140-page Master's project, Human Trafficking Across America: Stories of Survivors, which stems from her advocacy endeavors to shed light on and raise awareness about domestic human trafficking and the laws that directly affect how buyers are penalized and victims are protected. Additionally, Khloe has been actively involved in the Native Daughters: Oklahoma project--serving as a reporter for the second edition of the print publication.
Khloe is excited to begin her internship at Vision Maker Media stating, "With my knowledge of human trafficking issues, I am interested in potentially putting together a mini-series about how reservations have been impacted in order to help raise awareness. Additionally, it will benefit my skills pertaining to shooting and editing video, as well as filming stand-ups as I continue to work towards my long-term goals of a career in broadcasting."
Vision Maker Media's Executive Director Shirley K. Sneve (Rosebud Sioux) commented, "Providing experience for Native students in Public Media is vitally important to ensure that we can continue a strong tradition of digital storytelling. We are grateful for the support of local PBS stations in helping us achieve this goal."
With major funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the purpose of this paid Public Media Summer Internship is to increase the journalism and production skills for the selected college student. One of the major goals of the internship will be to increase the quantity and quality of multimedia reporting available to Public Television audiences and other news outlets. Later this summer, Vision Maker Media will begin accepting applications for its Fall Semester paid internship which will be announced on www.visionmakermedia.org/intern.
