This has been a sad year for us. We have lost several iconic figures from our youth. The recent passing of Coaches Herb Hill, Louis Ruiz and last December our illustrious band director Rick Marino have served to remind us that we are not getting any younger. All three were wonderful men who helped to guide us through our high school years.
Coach Hill was our first Head Football Coach. He and Coach Gib Dear worked with our young men to forge some great teams really quite quickly in our schools history. In the Fall of 1968 our Saxon Football Team won the 3A CIF Championship. If you consider that our school was only 6 years old and that it started in 1962 with only Sophomores, no Juniors or Seniors, it really is quite an accomplishment on their part and the student athletes.
Coach Ruiz was also a football coach as well as a wrestling coach. And of course they both taught drivers education throughout the years. I last saw Coach Ruiz at Loara's 50th Anniversary Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in 2012. He actually cut the ribbon that day and I thought it was wonderful that he could be there to do that!
Coach Hill and Ruiz you will be missed but will be forever in our hearts. God Speed Gentlemen!
The Alumni Association has a couple of events coming up. Our usual breakfasts at Marie Callendar's on Euclid in Anaheim on the 2nd Saturday of every month. We are also having a bowling party at Linbrook Bowl on Brookhurst in Anaheim on April 25th. Be sure to get your money in soon for that one as we need to reserve lanes for you!!
We are also planning another lunch type of event out at Tom's Farms in the Corona area so keep an eye out for more details on that event as they become available in the near future.
We still need your help with the Time Capsule!! What is the "Time Capsule?" In conjunction with the 50th Anniversary the association purchased a stainless steel time capsule to fill with artifacts from Loara's past and to bury on campus to be opened in 25 or 50 years. We thought this was going to be an easy thing to do. However the school district now has a long list of rules one must follow. We must create a concrete vault for the time capsule and use a school district approved contractor to do the work. The estimated cost is about $3000.00 to create the vault and for a marker plaque to go on top. We have the time capsule and we have artifacts to go inside, we just need the funds to pay for the concrete vault. To date we have collected about $700.00 so we have a ways to go. Remember, all your contributions are Tax Deductible!!
Once again I want to thank all our new members for joining us and those members who have renewed their membership. We can't help Loara without your generous donations. The Alumni Association is a non-profit corporation but we still have some expenses. Website, insurance, accountant, postage to name a few. Your membership dues pay for that as well as helping us give back to the current and future students at Loara. The more members we have the more we can do! So, if you haven't joined yet please visit our website and sign up. It only costs as little as $20.00 per year and it is Tax Deductible!!
I hope to see you soon at one of our events!
Best regards,
