Welcome to the Loara Saxons Alumni Association e-newsletter!
Message from the President

Hi fellow Saxons,

I hope you all had a wonderful Hanukah and Christmas!

As part of the season of giving, your Association participated in the Winter Wishes program at Loara this year. Winter Wishes fulfills some of the needy and deserving student wishes with gifts. A new laptop computer was donated to the association and we donated that to a 12th grade student heading to college after graduation. More details and photos will be coming on this later. Check our website and Facebook page after the first of the year.

Did you attend the Holiday Brunch at Orange Hill Restaurant? If not you really missed out. The food was wonderful and the views were spectacular. The white elephant gift exchange was a hoot! Lots of fun!! Click here to see pictures.  We plan on doing this again next year and I hope to see you there!

We have had quite a few new members join us over the past month. This is great news and we look forward to even more Saxons coming on board. Please encourage your classmates to join. Your donations help us preserve our history and traditions while helping current Saxon students.

To those of you who have renewed their memberships I want to thank you! We really do appreciate it!! If you have received a membership renewal and not mailed it in please do so. $20.00 per year keeps you current and helps us out.

We do have a Time Capsule we want to bury on campus this year. We have been gathering artifacts for a couple of years now and would love to have more to go in it. If you have something to donate email me at [email protected].

The time capsule is quite large, 12 inches by 12 inches by 24 inches tall. The district will require that we use their contractor to build a vault and bury it on campus. The estimated cost is $3000.00. If you would like to donate to this please click here.

We are looking into doing an evening event for those that are unable to make it to the monthly breakfasts. Not everyone can make a breakfast and there have been requests for something later in the day or evening. If you have suggestions please email them to us!

The next monthly breakfast will be January 10th at Marie Calendar's on Euclid in Anaheim at 9am!! I hope to see you there!!

I wish you and your families a Very Happy and Healthy New Year!

John D. Marshall -- President

Loara has the Spirit of the Season!
by Anna Kunkle
***Annual Toy Drive was held from December 8 - 12, 2014.  All toys collected needed to be unwrapped for kids ages newborn - 17.  The Alumni Association participated and donated the toys below.

***Locks of Love was on December 17, 2014.  Students made a unique gift of their hair which was then donated to cancer patients.  In order to participate a minimum of 6" of hair needed to be donated.

It was a festive time at Loara High School!  Santa even had time to stop by.  Loara students and Sammy Saxon have the spirit of the season!

Where Are They Now? - Rodger Pfingsten, 1966
by Anna Kunkle

This month's Where are They Now is a graduate from 1966. It has been a long time since graduation but Rodger Pfingsten has been doing well. While at Loara, he states his "most memorable ASB experience was the placing of our mascot in the Senior Circle." "Loara taught me how to be grown up and professional." Also, "Loara prepared me by showing me the possibilities of the world."

When it came to extra-curricular activities, Rodger was in the Religious Studies group. This led him to receive a double major Bachelor's degree in music and the Bible with a minor in communications from Biola University. In college, " I went to churches, directed the school musical groups (choir, small ensembles), and helped Biola transition from women's trios and men's quartets to mixed groups, larger than four. I also took the larger groups on tour."

After graduation from Biola University, Rodger taught music at Whittier Christian Elementary and went on a mission trip for two years to Puerto Rico. In 1976 Rodger married Cheryl Rasmussen, a music graduate from Bob Jones University. In 1981, he received his Master's degree from San Jose University. He continued his education by learning programming, with an emphasis on Visual Basic, SQL, PHP, HTML, CSS, and C# languages. He ran his own business, Pfingsten Technology Group, Inc., until 2004.

Rodger and Cheryl are still happily married and Rodger is enjoying retirement.

Loara Choir needs your support!

by Lorena (Munoz) Dayton

The Loara Choral Music Department is going strong with 5 choirs and over 130 students participating. After at least 10 years with the same dresses and tuxedos it was time to purchase new outfits. With no money provided by the district for new outfits, and with organizations not being allowed to charge the students any money, the Choral Music Booster parents have been fundraising for several years to purchase these uniforms, and although all of the money has not been raised, we had to go ahead with the purchase. The old dresses were literally falling apart. Skirts no longer would zip and were pinned together, hems were ripped, and the velvet tops of the two-piece dresses were threadbare. The boys outfits also had to be replaced.

So, our director Mr. Rigsby paid by credit card, and the boosters are paying him back as we can. The entire purchase was over $7,000.
We would love it if any choir alumni would like to "sponsor a dress or a tux"!  We purchased a single style dress for all the choirs to wear, instead of different dresses, so that sizing and replacement would be easier. We purchased new pants, vests, shirts, and ties for all the boys. The dresses run approximately $60 plus tax, and the boys outfits are about the same
.
Anything alumni can do is appreciated! Checks can be made out to Loara Choral Music Boosters and mailed to the school at
