Michele Kent is featured panelist at NJ Spotlight Conference

This month, LeadingAge New Jersey's President and CEO Michele Kent presented at the NJ Spotlight Conference entitled "The Future of Long-Term Care in New Jersey." Kent was a featured panelist on the topic of "The Future of Nursing Homes & Palliative Care."

Andrew Kitchenman, moderator and healthcare writer for NJ Spotlight noted. "It was important having LeadingAge New Jersey here today. They are industry leaders in long-term care and they bring a valuable perspective in terms of the economic and insurance-related issues affecting senior care in our State."

LeadingAge New Jersey in Trenton

If you happened to be in the State House in Trenton on Monday, September 15,  and if you were among the hundreds of people walking the lower level corridor to committee meetings and voting sessions, then you surely saw LeadingAge New Jersey's exhibit!  More importantly, you would have seen a number of our members not only manning the table, but talking up our Association as well as their respective facilities and programs. The centerpiece of the day were the seven separate meetings we had with key Legislative Leadership. Each meeting included several of our members as well as staff from our lobbying firm, Princeton Public Affairs Group (PPAG), and LeadingAge staff (moi). Speaking of PPAG, not only did they organize the entire day and schedule our meetings, but Dale Florio manned our exhibit table virtually all day.....steering such notables as Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno (pictured above with LANJ members Karen Scalera, Larry Carlson, Lt. Governor, Michele Kent, Kate Shepard, Sunni Herman) Senate President Steve Sweeney and others over to meet with us. The private meetings were with Assemblyman Jon Bramnick (Assembly Minority Leadership); Assemblyman Gary Schaer (Assembly Budget Committee Chair); Senator Tom Kean (Senate Minority Leader); Senator Joseph Vitale (Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Chair); Senator Paul Sarlo (Senate Deputy Majority Leader); Speaker of the General Assembly Vincent Prieto; and Assemblyman Louis Greenwald (Assembly Majority Leader). Not a shabby group!

This was the sort of event and these were the type of meetings that are particularly effective. Our message was simple: this is who we are, we are mission-driven and nonprofit, please use us whenever you and your constituents have questions about or need care for loved ones. To not always be "begging for dollars" is a refreshing approach and was very well received.

Thanks to all who participated! Click here to see photos from our day at the Statehouse.

LANJ Golf Outing

LANJ Chairperson, Bonnie Kelly, once again, had her mojo cookin' when we had fabulous weather for our Golf Outing on September 22 (or perhaps it was all those years of Catholic schooling?). No matter, the Pine Barrens Golf Club in Jackson was in superb shape, the sun was out, and our 70+ golfers were in high spirits; all in all a wonderful day full of camaraderie and fun.

I cannot thank enough the many sponsors for this annual event, both business partners and providers.  And, importantly, proceeds from this event go, in part, to support our LeadingAge New Jersey Scholarship Fund.  This is the kind of day that makes one feel good all over....and proud to be part of such a strong association.
