December, 2013

Welcome to the first edition of the Prince of Peace Church E-news!  It was created to share some of  the many wonderful things that are happening throughout our parish.

Father John Fallon

Heading
Day of Service Exceeds Expectations!

Over 240(!)  Prince of Peace volunteers poured into Catholic Social Services' warehouse on a rainy December afternoon to participate in our first "Day of Service."  Despite the cold, gray, and dreary weather outside, the climate inside was warm, sunny and welcoming.

Volunteers sorted and shelved ten pallets of food from the November food drive. They created hundreds of disaster relief hygiene kits from the hundreds of products generously donated by Prince of Peace School's students.

Warehouse storage shelves were built and painted and Christmas decorations were hung throughout the building.  The Adventure Ark Playschool generously provided free babysitting to children of the volunteers.

There was a pizza lunch for the volunteers and time to meet new friends and catch up with old friends. By 1:30 pm all of the work was completed!  To view more photos click here.

Many have inquired about other volunteer opportunities at Catholic Social Services.  The Service Pillar, which created the Day of Service, is working with CSS to determine specific areas in which parishioners can be of service.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this parish-wide service project to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters in the Birmingham area.  It was a great way to practice living a life of stewardship this Advent.  Look for the second Day of Service this Lent!

PoP's Christmas Gift to Vredenburgh

Parishioner Bill Lees recently delivered an early Christmas gift to the Build a Better Community group in Vredenburgh, AL on behalf of Prince of Peace Church.  The $2500 donation will pay for internet access for 2014 for the Vredenburgh Community Development Center and an instructor to teach computer skills to local  residents.

Sisters Nancy Clark, SSJ and Kathy Navarra, SSJ (pictured) are part of the Edmundite Catholic Outreach ministry.  They have been living and working in the Alabama Black Belt for over 40 years.

Prince of Peace has supported the work of the Sisters in Vredenburgh for many years.

Breakfast with Santa

The Adventure Ark Playschool made special arrangements with the North Pole again this year for Santa to make an early December stop in Hoover!  Over 200 kids came to the breakfast fundraiser in Deasy Hall.  Guests brought an unwrapped baby gifts that were donated to needy new and expectant mothers.

Parish Christmas Dinner Dance

The annual parish Christmas party had it all - good food, music, an open bar and the hospitality of our three parish priests.  Fr. Fallon greeted everyone as they arrived on that rainy Friday evening. He gave the blessing for dinner and sent all seniors attending to the front of the buffet line.  Al Sartain and the Leftovers  played a broad mix of music and  party-goers danced throughout the evening.  Dinner was provided by Char House catering

It was a great social evening and if you didn't make it this year, we hope to see you next year!

La Posada

The Birmingham Hispanic community celebrated La Posada at Prince of Peace Church on December 14.  The word posada means "inn" or "shelter" in Spanish, and these celebrations recreate Mary and Joseph's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem.

There was a beautiful Nativity in
Deasy Hall, toys, books, food and coats available to all.  Our school's House of St. Thomas middle school service group collected and distributed 200 men's, women's and children's coats, hats, gloves and scarves for this day thanks to the generosity of parish, school and community families.

The Hoover High School Spanish Club and a Bumpus Middle School Girl Scout troop donated over 3,000 books.  The Scouts also collected 400 toys to add to those also collected by Just Faith and the MOM's group at PoP.  The Holy Name Society distributed Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, prayer cards, which were very popular.  He is the patron saint of immigrants.

Our church and LaCasita donated pizza for the event and the Hispanic Ministry was busy in the kitchen making other delicious foods for La Posada guests to enjoy.
Confirmation Candidates' Retreat to Columbiana

Our tenth grade confirmation candidates spent a fun fall day at the  Alabama 4H Center in Columbiana as part of their formation program.  The 78 kids boarded buses early on a Sunday morning and drove an hour to experience team building activities focusing  on communication, trust, and teamwork skills at the 264-acre conference facility.

High School Youth Minister Lauren Atchison and Father Tom Ackerman (aided by six adult parish volunteers) were on hand to tie the team building skills into formation and lead thought-provoking discussions on the Holy Trinity, praying the Rosary, using their God-given talents, and "Why Are You Catholic?"

The retreat focused on problem solving, decision making as well as increasing personal confidence and self-esteem.  "This retreat gave the kids a chance to build trust, fellowship, and character which are all important qualities not only for an individual seeking Confirmation in the Catholic Church, but in life as well," said Lauren Atchison.  "The retreat was a fantastic opportunity to gather everyone together in a relaxed environment and discuss our faith," she added.

The group returned to Prince of Peace for the Sunday 5 pm mass where they served as greeters, readers, and lectors.  "The kids on the retreat were able to see how their preparation for Confirmation and the reception of the Holy Spirit tied into their relationship with others and with the parish," said Father Ackerman.

This confirmation class is part of our ever-growing youth formation ministry that currently has 1,025 students from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade enrolled.  This includes Sunday religious education, a middle school youth group, and a high school youth group.  If you're interested in volunteering within this rewarding ministry, contact Director of Formation Megan Everett.

School Field Trips to Camp Cosby and Dauphin Island

Camp Cosby - Fifth graders spent an unforgettable three days and two nights at YMCA's Camp Cosby's "outdoor classroom" this fall.  The students experienced what they have been learning in the classroom and took advantage of many other learning opportunities on this twelfth annual field trip that has become a much anticipated event of fifth grade.

They learned safe and proper canoe techniques on Lake Logan Martin and survival skills on land including building a fire, shelter and rescue signals.  In the Life Learning Lab, the fifth graders touched a six foot long ball python and discovered how animals adapt to survive in their environments.  Another fun part of the trip was the "Ways of Old Days" simulation that took the students back in time to the pioneer days by writing with a quill and ink and making their own toys.  Plant physiology, geology, water cycles were also part of the curriculum.

The students were accompanied by their teachers Donna Hecklinski and Laurie Jones, Principal Connie Angstadt, Father Tom Ackerman, Guidance Counselor Debbie Calvert as well as parent chaperones. Mrs. Angstadt said, "I always treasure this learning opportunity with our fifth grade students. Every student is blessed with special gifts and so many of these gifts rise to the surface at camp.   We create lifetime memories."

Dauphin Island Sea Lab - The fall trip to Dauphin Island is eagerly anticipated by all seventh graders.  Two nights and three days on the barrier island at Alabama's Marine Science Institute's Sea La b gives the students an unforgettable, hands-on marine biology experience that sometimes gets a little, well a lot, messy!

The kids threw themselves into study at the salt marsh by wading (and sometimes falling) into the marsh mud to investigate the marsh's ecosystem.  They used nets to fish along the bay and explored the coastal wetlands to see the maritime flora and fauna.  They boarded a research vessel and trawled around Mobile Bay.  Back on shore, they dissected squid in a classroom science room.  There was also a visit to historic Fort Gaines to explore the fort, watch a blacksmith in action and fire a canon.

Teachers Gregory Hughes (middle school social studies), Ericka Bray (middle school science)  along with Assistant Principal Katie King and parent chaperones accompanied the seventh grade on this trip.   Mrs. King said, "Dauphin Island is an incredible experience for our students.  It is a joy to see them completely immersed in nature-- witnessing them learn in a pure and happy form and simply absorbing everything.  This is the way true learning was meant to be."

Stewardship Prayer for December

Come Lord Jesus!

Make us good stewards of Advent.  Strengthen our faith; calm our fears.

Come Lord Jesus!
We hear John the Baptist's cry. Open our hearts. Give us the humility to repent.

Come, Lord Jesus!

Let us walk in your light! Show us how we prepare your way; and make straight your paths.

Come, Lord Jesus!
We give you thanks and praise, for the shining star and angelic host, for Mary and Joseph, good stewards, both.

Come, Lord Jesus!
We rejoice and are glad! For the Good News you bring and God's glory you revealed.

Come, Lord Jesus!

Amen!
