Modern culture has popularized the golden age of buccaneering. Disney created "Pirates of the Caribbean" and introduced "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" as an anthem for sailing the seven seas. Years before, Robert Louis Stevenson's book, Treasure Island, painted a vivid picture of swashbucklers with hoards of doubloons buried on a secret tropical island. This fascination with discovering hidden gold has permeated society's imagination-even landlubbers know the basics for finding treasure: follow the map, use a compass to navigate the journey, and then dig wherever "X" marks the spot.
Funnily enough, this process is very similar to the way in which today's corporate heroes can discover business value. First, BRMs should know the organization's strategy. They can then use the tools presented in this article to find potential value opportunities and "dig" for answers. The only difference is that the real treasures of today's corporate world are the sources of business value, whatever they may be. Read on to learn where "X" marks the spot, and how to find these sources of value. >>

Here is a little-known fact: if you have the expectation that a person will be negative, that will show in your face, tone, and even in the words that you choose. Your bias will be evident, and in turn the person will react negatively to everything that you communicate, verbally and otherwise. This is a concept called the Chameleon Effect. As this principle demonstrates, people tend to respond to an experience in ways that reproduce exactly what others expect of them. Some people would call this a self-fulfilling prophecy, but the Chameleon Effect is the scientific term for it.
Negative partners tend to fall into three categories:
- People with chronic negative attitudes. (You can't help but feel sad for people who are in this situation.)
- People who are just going through a negative time, but who have high potential if they are energized.
- People who you believe are negative, but in reality it's only your perspective. (For example, if a person disagrees with you in a meeting, you can see them as negative.)
Does someone you know fall into one of these categories? The great news is that there are ways to turn around a negative situation by using a few simple tools. >>

The role of a BRM is a tough but rewarding job. Often, you're asked to be many things to many more people in order to be a strategic partner while also delivering business value. Some of you are an army of one or two, doing your best to help others understand how you can help them and pushing to prove the value of the BRM role in a tangible way. While leaders rarely have an issue understanding the value of a Business Analyst or Project Manager, there are often questions about the value a BRM provides-and so the list of challenges you face as a BRM goes on!
What if you could play a role in changing the narrative and addressing these challenges head-on? You can, and the Lean-Agile Mindset training class can show you how. >>

STEPHANIE WALSH, FRONT AND CENTER
Stephanie Walsh, BRMP, Senior Director, and BRM Council Chair, is nothing if not a leader. Every time I have a conversation with her, I'm struck by how genuine, passionate, and committed she is-not only to the field of BRM or her career, but to the people she works with every single day. Aside from her numerous achievements and career milestones (the list could probably go on forever, but she's too modest to tell you that, so I will), Stephanie is a true testament to the fact that a leader is only a leader insofar as there are people willing to trust them to be one.
Read my interview with her to learn more about how she knew she was meant to be a BRM, what keeps her going every day, and how she finds joy and fulfillment both in the workplace and outside of it. >>

I once worked with a wise man who was responsible for the upkeep of a popular community center. The locals were very fond of this place and would visit frequently, having gotten used to its comfortable setting and appearance. In fact, they were so attached to the center as--is, they resisted all possible change to it--yet the man had an idea that would make the atmosphere much more appealing to the public, and that was moving a centerpiece fixture to another location so that the staff could perform their work more effectively. However, the man knew that if he moved the table, the public would complain, and he would have to relent. So what did he do? He decided to move the fixture several feet once a month. Over the period of a year, it was moved to the intended place and the locals never even noticed. Not only can the staff now serve the public more efficiently, but the locals also happen to be as satisfied as ever.
There is a lesson in this story for strategic BRMs. BRMs have a very difficult job, dealing with people who have different objectives, work in different positions, and, most of all, have different chief stakeholders within the organizational model. These people also come from starting positions that did not include working with a formal BRM. All of these issues require the BRM to manage many different situations in a graceful way--and sometimes, the best way to do so is by taking it slow. >>
