Are You Registered?
BRMs, Are You Too Busy to be Strategic?
by Vaughan Merlyn

One of the most common issues I hear from Business Relationship Managers is that they are too busy to be strategic (or just too busy-period!) In today's downsized business climate, most people indeed feel too busy. The issue is real. When the traditional employer-employee pact-"You work for us until you retire, and we will take care of you for life"-began to erode towards the end of the 20th century, the concept of the benevolent employer dissolved into a frenzy of downsizing, outsourcing, and delayering. More often than not, employees began feeling like 'victims' rather than the 'valued assets' referred to in their company's prominently displayed Vision Statement.

The BRM Council's Latest Addition: Meet Chris Lucas!
At BRMI, we take special pleasure in celebrating the achievements of our teammates and members, particularly when they have to do with furthering BRM as an art and discipline! Meet Chris Lucas, an IT Director at The Pennsylvania State University and member of the BRM Council Leadership Team. Chris recently presented on the intersection of BRM and higher education alongside Amanda Petersen of West Virginia University at the 2015 Educause Annual Conference, one of the world's biggest conferences on higher education. Through this experience, not only did Chris learn that there is growing interest in BRM within IT in higher education, but he was also able to hold meaningful dialogue with professionals who perform BRM activities in various roles but were otherwise unaware of BRMI as an organization. We love any opportunity to connect with BRMs, regardless of their profession---thanks for the shoutout, Chris!
Dealing with Organizational Politics - All Part of the BRM's Kitbag
by Robina Chatham, Leading Edge Forum
In the workplace, organizational politics are a fact of life.  Organizations, being made up of people, are essentially political institutions.  All business professionals need to be adept at dealing with political situations, but some are better at it than others.

Make Your Nominations Now!
It's time to recognize those who have made positive impacts in the advancement of the BRM discipline, both locally within their organization and worldwide through sharing their ideas and raising awareness!

BRM Council Corner
by Jeremy Byrne
Welcome to this edition of the BRM Council Corner! This month, we will discuss the role of the Council at BRMI conferences. There has been only one conference to date, but what a conference it was! To see just how amazing it was click here .

BRMConnect 2015 was held in Portland, Oregon, and the Council was honored to perform the role of owner and facilitator at the conference. Our responsibilities included helping to welcome the delegates to the venue, putting them at ease, and answering any questions that arose. Additionally, we managed breakout groups to evoke participation and creativity, which was particularly rewarding when we solved some key issues people were facing in their work. Most importantly, however, it was a pleasure to join in and ensure that everyone was having fun and getting as much BRM value as possible.

This was a highly rewarding role for the Council, between our assistance with bringing everything together to seeing the value transferred from the conference delivery to the delegates. One session I particularly enjoyed was the simulation in which we put the theory and advice into action in a simulated, "real-life" situation. This was kept light-hearted and fun, while also highlighting the issues and techniques needed to overcome them in an organizational environment-the beer and pizza provided was the icing on the cake.

In 2016, we now have the exciting prospect of not one, but four BRMConnect conferences spread throughout the year and across the globe-so despite four times the work, there will also be four times the reward (and of course, four times the fun!). This year, the Council members are thrilled to have the opportunity to take on more responsibilities within the conferences by becoming more involved in the planning stages, as well as the ownership and facilitation of the conferences.
BRM Capability: Strategic Planning and Roadmapping
by Santosh Kadatare
As the CIO, how can a BRM help me? What does a BRM actually do on a day-to-day basis? What is a BRM accountable for? These questions (and many more!) are on the minds of many CIOs who haven't yet embraced some form of IT and business partnership.

Furthermore, why do CIOs demand answers to these questions? The answer: when implementing something new within an organization-such as a BRM capability-the purpose and expectations should be crystal clear. Since the CIO is the primary sponsor of the BRM capability, they should be able to convey what a BRM does and how they can add value in the pursuit of IT and business partnership, which is critical when the CIO is seeking buy-in from C-level peers.

Exciting CBRM Announcement!

BRMs Developing BRMs™ Mentoring
The program is available exclusively to BRMI members and is structured in five phases, beginning with a mentor-mentee assignment in a manner that provides maximum value to both individuals. Once assigned, the mentor and the mentee meet to identify goals and outcomes and agree on a mentoring plan. The formalized mentoring program spans over a nine-months period, with a review of the process occurring midway through, and again at the conclusion of the nine-month program. Friendship and professional bonds formed between the peer mentors may last for a lifetime.

Breaking Down Silos: Failed Efforts and What Business Relationship Managers Can Do about It

by Vaughan Merlyn
Many companies today are burdened by silos-separate departments that are optimized for a specific function or set of functions, but that are otherwise essentially impervious to anything going on around them that doesn't necessarily relate to their functions. For example, we see this across business functions, where manufacturing, sales, marketing, distribution and R&D each operate in their own cocoons. We also see it inside support functions, such as Information Technology (IT) and Human Resources. In IT, for example, it is not uncommon to have silos around strategy, architecture, operations and solutions delivery. Things become further complicated by additional layers of silos around specific platforms or technologies, which form a kind of informal matrix with the functional silos. Cross silo units such as Program Management Offices and Centers of Competence around disciplines such as 6 Sigma or Agile have a hard time gaining traction with the organizational silos they were established to help.
