Building the Foundation for Business - Technology Integration

By Jeanne Kerr, SPHR, HCS, SWP

For the sake of transparency, I am not an IT person. (I am married to one, but I'm not sure how much that counts). So, why am I writing this article for BRMI? Having spent the past 20 plus years in Human Resources, I have a deep understanding about becoming a business partner and trusted advisor. It is astounding just how much IT and HR professionals have in common.

First, in the eyes of many business leaders and owners, we both fall into the "bucket of necessary evil." In these folks' minds, the role of HR is to keep them from being sued, and the role of IT is to... well, it seems to have something to do with keeping email running and making sure orders process and ship. We both constantly feel we need to justify our existence and beg for the resources to simply stay afloat.

Whether we call our quest Business Relationship Manager or Strategic HR Business Partner, the challenges and solutions are the same. If we want to be seen as more than service and support providers, we need to integrate ourselves into the business. Believe me, the business will not do this for us. Where to begin?

BRMP® - 40 Minutes, 50 Questions
By Linda Hornung, BRMP

That's all the math I needed to know for the BRMP certification exam! My journey to BRMP certification began with the three day BRMP course through APMG International and The Merlyn Group, led by Vaughan Merlyn. The instruction provided a rich and thorough introduction to the BRM topics, and the opportunity to ask questions.

Busy professionals will also appreciate Vaughan's generous half hour breaks throughout the training. The class was held on Mondays for three weeks, which allowed time to review, reflect, and examine my daily work through the lens of a BRM practitioner.

The BRM Interactive Body of Knowledge (BRMiBOK) is an invaluable aid that dives into greater depth on all topics and provides great useful supplemental materials. The ability to easily navigate to linked topics maximized my study time. The Concepts list provided a study guide and the Glossary served as another review checklist; all linked within the online BRMiBOK, a benefit of BRMI professional membership.

The practice exam prepared me well for the real exam by allowing me to see how questions would be phrased, and showing how I would need to look at the topics from an inter-related and in-depth perspective. I wanted my certification soon, but also wanted time to re-read the BRMiBOK, review the slides from the lectures, pour over the concepts list, and take the practice exam (several times). So I allowed three weeks between the class and taking the exam, a time period I found to be perfect.

It was easy to book my exam with ProctorU, and to test my home computer set-up beforehand. At the appointed date and time my proctor met me and went over ID verification and preliminary instructions. Then it was on to the exam, and to my successful BRMP certification!

Ask an Expert!

Extracted from BRMI Online Campus

Question:

We appointed a new CIO earlier this year and are on the cusp of a reorganization within IT. From the looks of it, we'll finally get to a true BRM model. A stumbling point we have is how to properly size such an organization. As you know, over 25% of our workforce are deemed "business partners" today. That's far too many from my perspective.. and the majority of them work more as business analysts (which are also necessary). Do you know of any best practice that articulates the ratio of BRMs to BAs, or perhaps numbers of BRMs based upon size of business?

Our Expert, Vaughan Merlyn, Says:

There really are no reliable benchmark statistics on this today - we hope to generate some through BRMI research. The most common model is as follows:

  1. Lead BRMs - senior people who interact with business unit leads. Common to see one BRM covering between one and three business units, depending upon the size, complexity and maturity of the business unit.
  2. BRM Managers - mid-level folk (often on a career track to Lead BRM) interacting with mid-to-senior business people. Common to see 3-5 of these for every BRM Lead.
  3. Business Analysts - senior BA type folk (often on a career track to BRM Manager) supporting BRM Leads and Managers. Common to see one or more these for every BRM Manager and they sit in the business for optimal results

I'd take these as rough guidelines - much depends on business and IT maturity and varies on the nature of business units. E.g., at your company I'd expect Supply Chain, regional units, and HR to be very active, and legal and finance to be less active.
