Question:
How do you influence stakeholders to move to a strategic way of thinking rather than tactical short-term fixes?
Our Expert Says: It's a perennial question and issue. Many companies seem biased towards a short-term, reactive style. Getting a more strategic view, with the longer timeframe that this typically implies is an ongoing challenge for many BRM roles.
A reality is that a significant change in leadership (e.g., new CEO, new CIO) is sometimes the catalyst for a major, and potentially rapid, shift in management style. Without a change in leadership, it's often a market crisis of some sort, or a significant new competitive or regulatory force, that catalyzes the shift.
For the BRM, I think some of the clichs apply:
- Find and sell the 'pain' (cost of status quo, risks and threats, opportunities not being seized, etc.)
- Find and sell the 'remedy' (some strategic possibilities, opportunities or threats)
- Lay out some first steps-at least an executive workshop or retreat to explore strategic options

BRMs Developing BRMs™ Communities of Interest
|
BRMI announces the expansion of its exclusive members-only BRMs Developing BRMs™, leadership development program.
Following hot on the heels of the successful launch of BRM Mentoring, the first program offered under the BRMs Developing BRMs initiative, is a new program, Communities of Interest. Communities of Interest aims to give members with particular industries, geographies, or any other common professional interest a chance to join in online-forum discussions relevant to their chosen communities.
|
Communities of Interest are designed to help BRMI members expand their knowledge and professional BRM network through the development of informal cross-BRMI relationships with the added relevance of a community aligned to their particular area of interest. The number and type of communities will evolve, but it is inspiring to see several pioneering Communities of Interest established already!
Commenting on the launch, BRMI member and program leader Reuben Connolly said, "The Members Hangout and pages within the BRMI Online Campus have already provided a sound platform for members to reach out to one another, ask questions, and make comments or generally say 'hello', but the Communities of Interest take this a step further by offering the opportunity to engage in open discussions in a more focused environment, safe in the knowledge that those involved have opted-in to participate." So far, four Communities of Interest have been set up to get the ball rolling and understand the needs and challenges of the members in this space. Specifically these are: Asia Pacific, Higher Education,High Technology, and United Kingdom. Chris Lucas, community leader for Higher Education Community of Interest, said, "The Higher Education Community of Interest will be a place for those of us working as business relationship managers in the academic environment to build a strong community whose members are willing to share their successes, challenges, questions, and best practices as well as provide support to their peers. The community will be owned by its members who will drive the direction and focus of the group. This is a great opportunity to expand your professional network and learn from your peers." Similar sentiments are echoed by Monica Graham, Reuben Connolly, and Venkat Gopalakrishnan who have established the Asia Pacific, United Kingdom, and High Tech BRMI communities, respectively. To see what it's all about and learn more or to set up your own Community of Interest, become a BRMI member or ask us for more information. Special thanks go out to Rueben Connolly for his efforts in making Communities of Interest a reality for our members! |

Attributes of a Business Relationship Manager The Importance of Personal Power
Kirt Mead, Leading Edge Forum
Tuesday, January 27, 2015
11:00 a.m. EST
|
Many BRMs struggle to be included in the business management team. Too often, business colleagues call their BRM to discuss technology issues only after the business decisions regarding a prospective project have been made. The BRM is treated as a vendor, not as a partner.
Leading Edge Forum has been researching the BRM role for many years, and we find that the most successful BRMs succeed when they are seen as business people who are able to contribute to the business beyond questions of technology. They understand that their job is a performance, and that they need to have personal impact if they are to be seen as broad players in the business. In short, the effective and successful BRM shows up as personally powerful.
Kirt Mead will discuss:
- Definition of personal power
- Where personal power comes from
- Tips on how it can be learned
- Examples of how powerful BRMs are already adding exceptional value
