BRMI announces Platinum Sponsorship from CSC's Leading Edge Forum

Since its first days, we, at Business Relationship Management Institute (BRMI), have always been looking for and establishing partnerships with select organizations that share our passion for the Business Relationship Management (BRM) discipline and help us to better serve the global BRM community. It is our pleasure to announce that CSC's Leading Edge Forum (CSC LEF), a preeminent global research and thought-leadership community, is the newest Platinum Sponsor of BRMI.

For over 35 years, CSC LEF has been dedicated to delivering thought leadership to large organizations. While other research firms focus on current IT management practices, CSC LEF helps companies identify and adopt Next Practices at the growing intersection between business and information technology. CSC LEF delivers research-based services that enable Enterprise IT to improve foresight and effectiveness as well as promote business goals.

Both BRMI and CSC LEF believe that the BRM capability is  a vital element of organizational success. In a world where businesses and marketplaces are steeped in technology, the BRM role bridges the gap between a service provider and the business that depends on those services. With this sponsorship, BRMI and CSC LEF are joining forces to expand BRMI's Certified Business Relationship Manager (CBRM) program and other professional development offerings, allowing the educational know-how and consulting expertise of CSC LEF to benefit organizations in implementing or improving their BRM capabilities. "We are very proud to have CSC LEF as one of BRMI's premier sponsors. CSC LEF has recognized the importance of a BRM capability, since 2006, and has been very active promoting the importance of the BRM role, having delivered numerous programs in world class organizations across the globe," said Aaron Barnes, BRMI's CEO and co-founder.

Ask
Ask an Expert:
Using Agile approach in an organization
"Agile is one of the approaches I use as a BRM to manage IT supply and demand at this time when funding is more difficult to get but demand continues to be the same level or more. What's your experiences with Agile approach in your companies? Did it work for you?"

This question was originally posted in our Ask an Expert section in the Members' wiki. There were multiple replies, including one from Vaughan Merlyn, one of the co-founders of BRMI and foremost expert in the field of Business Relationship Management. Below is a shortened version of his response. Members can read the complete thread here (membership required).

What our Expert says:

I've posted at length about business demand and IT supply maturity. I've also posted about the "sticking points" that typically surface at mid-Level 2 supply maturity. (Read his posts at vaughanmerlyn.com)

From my experience, Agile is an approach that demands relatively high business demand and IT supply maturity. However, it gets taken up by lower maturity organizations who hit a sticking point (e.g. unable to get people to follow a standard SDLC or project management methodology) and go the Agile route as a way around it.

Agile is great! It meets the characteristics near and dear to the BRM's heart -- deliver value early, deliver value quickly, deliver value often! But if you haven't really figured out waterfall and project management disciplines, then trying Agile is like putting a trainee pilot who's never landed a 777 Dreamliner in charge of landing 300+ passengers at SFO. A high risk move with potentially tragic consequences.

PBR
Business Relationship Manager
and Plan Build Run
By Aaron Barnes
Aaron Barnes
In this post, I define Business Relationship Management, Business Relationship Manager (BRM), Plan Build Run (PBR), and show how various BRMs act as both pivotal agents of the shared services provider they represent as well as key involved strategic partners to the business units they support through PBR.

Note: I provide high-level examples of some of the more predominant BRM roles, but by no means is it my intention to offer this as an all-inclusive list of all the BRM roles that might exist today.

Business Relationship Management and Business Relationship Manager

Business Relationship Management is defined by Business Relationship Management Institute (BRMI) as both an organizational capability and a role.

Organizational Capability: Business Relationship Management as an organizational capability, embodies a set of competencies (knowledge, skills, and behaviors) and processes that foster productive value-producing relationships between a Provider (IT, HR, Finance, Sales, etc.) and the business entities they serve.

Role: The Business Relationship Manager (BRM) role serves as the strategic interface between a Provider and one or more Business Partners to stimulate, surface, and shape demand for the Provider's products and services and ensure that the potential business value from those products and services is defined, realized, optimized and recognized.
