Did You Know?
Mark Twain visited the Hawaiian Islands in 1866 for four months before he was a well known author. A speech given sometime after his travels to Hawaii, Twain describes his love for Hawaii, "...For me its balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garland crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; ..." |

Live Like Locals on The Big Island
Tara Crawford
Holistic Health Coach For Emma Spencer Living
TaraOnMaui.com Fresh off a trip to the Big Island and I can't wait to go back. I had the good fortune of spending the weekend at the 5th St Ohana. This spontaneous get-away was a feast for the senses. From the beauty of the volcano, the tropical foliage, perfectly appointed accommodation and the local markets, I won't soon forget this stay.
With just 2 days to see Hilo and Volcano, there was little time left to sleep. We drove straight to the Hilo Farmers Market from the airport on Saturday morning. The market was in full swing. It was brimming with fresh picked island produce, locally made foods, soaps, crafts and even hammocks (which we couldn't resist, and now think of the Big Island as we rock back and forth in our backyard).
We picked up organic corn on the cob (the best we've ever tasted, so sweet), fresh cut salsas, croissants and a variety of tropical fruits to enjoy back at 5th Street Ohana.

Mangoes at Maku'u Market
|
After talking to many of the local vendors, we were told several times that we must check out the even larger Maku'u Farmers Market on Sunday (about 20 minutes from 5th Street Ohana). Could it get any better than the Hilo Farmers Market? Maku'u Market was added to our agenda. This we had to see for ourselves!

Summer Fruit: Pare it Down
Wes Hitchcock
Performance Coach For Emma Spencer Living www.A2BPerformance.com I'm often overwhelmed by the various to-do lists I create of both work and personal tasks. Like most driven individuals, I get a sense of satisfaction from achieving something on the to-do list; however, today's tasks are replaced with new tasks, in a never-ending cycle that seems insurmountable. How do you stay motivated when one task is replaced by another? Pare your to-do list down into 3-4 action items each day, and reward yourself when they're complete by having a personal action item upon success. You shouldn't feel guilty watching your favorite TV show, going to the gym, or relaxing with friends, even with a long to-do list hovering over you for the week, as long as you finish your goals for the day. |
Talk Story with Da Innkeeper
Meghan Jerolaman
Innkeeper
For Emma Spencer Living
This tale starts a few years ago when I was still field biologist. I was over in the hot, Kona sun studying an aquatic ecosystem when an uncle asked, "Where you stay?" In pidgin that question is similar to where do you live. As soon as I told him Volcano, he told me stories and the differences between the Kona side and Hilo side. But there is one particular thing he said to me that still sticks out in my mind. "Girl, da ginga is mean ova there. It smells so ono (good)."
