Happiness is a common theme in everyone's daily life. We've even done a few articles on how to increase happiness by following easy steps. And it's no surprise that after reading a recent study by the University of Vermont on 2011 tweets, that Hawaii is the happiest state. I attribute the results to our Aloha Spirit, pristine natural environments, and the different life style choices. Whether you enjoy the sun and beach, ranching, the outdoors, farming, or healthy living, here in Hawaii we have it all. Even snow! And let's not forget about our warm and welcoming Aloha.

Anthurium - Quintessential Hawaiian Flower

Upon arrival at Volcano Village Lodge, guests enter a lush tropical rainforest. Tall ferns and bamboo tower overhead. At ground level, little pops of color come from a variety of anthurium. Anthuriums are also used extensively throughout the guest and public rooms.

Anthurium is to many people the most Hawaiian of flowers. However, it is not native to the Hawaiian Islands, but Central and South America, and was introduced here in 1889 by way of England.

There are over 800 species of anthurium with many color combinations ranging from the popular reds, white, green, pink, purple and peach. The heart-shaped flower of anthuriums is really a waxy leaf (spathe) flaring out from the base of a fleshy spike (spadix) where the tiny real flowers grow.

See how many varieties you can spot on your next visit to Volcano Village Lodge!

Pearl Harbor: A DUD's Decision

America ended WWII as a WOW world leader, but our country may have remained a passive bystander if not for Japan's decision to bomb Pearl Harbor. "One can search military history in vain for an operation more fatal to the aggressor," according to historian Eliot Morison.  The decision to bomb Hawaii may be one of militaries biggest DUD decisions.

Pearl Harbor Tip

If you're planning on visiting Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial while on Oahu consider getting your tickets ahead of time online at USS Arizona Tours. The tickets to the Arizona Memorial are free, but there is a $1.50 online charge.  The convenience of having your time confirmed is well worth the service fee.

Many of our guests love to share their pictures with us. I got this one emailed me to the other week. It's a beautiful sunrise on Lanikai beach with the sun rising up over Na Mokulua Islands. Catching the sunrise from this beach is great opportunity for guests staying at our Kolea Estate. My first time to Hawaii, I stayed near by and vividly remember the shear beauty of this beach and the all the fun you can have basking in the sun or kayaking to the moku's. Kolea Estate is in a perfect location on the island of Oahu, not too far from things, but removed enough from Honolulu. Not only do you get plenty of beach time, but you can hike the pillboxes trail for sunrise and witness spectacular views of Kailua and Lanikai.
