21st Century Principals: What They Must Know and Be Able to Do

Principals in today's schools need particular skills to be effective. A review of the literature resulted in the synthesis of 12 skills that principals must demonstrate to lead 21st century schools effectively. They include:
  1. Visioning                    
  2. Strategic Planning
  3. Collaboration
  4. Data-driven Decision Making
  5. Systems Thinking
  6. Instructional Leadership
  7. Creating and Maintaining a Supportive School Culture
  8. Attention to the Needs of Special Populations
  9. Effective Communication
  10. Facilitating Stakeholder Involvement
  11. Promoting Technology Literacy
  12. Advancing Global Awareness and Cultural Diversity
Wilson (2014) identified five of the twelve skills as high need areas in school leader training for 21st century principals.      Read more.....
