Advancing Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

Refine your leadership skills through opportunities from ASCD and VASCD- like these!

1. Write for Virginia Educational Leadership.

The deadline is just around the corner, but it's not too late. Your idea, research, or innovative practice could be published this spring!  The submission deadline is Feb. 20. Articles are generally 4-6 pages long and we encourage images and video links as appropriate to support the content. More information here.

2. Attend Formative Assessment Leadership

This March 12 workshop in Richmond will feature the authors of Formative Assessment Leadership:  Identify, Plan, Apply, Assess, Refine.  Learn to integrate formative assessment into instruction AND use data from these assessments to inform decision making.  Register here.

 3. Apply for ASCD's Emerging Leaders Class of 2015

Emerging leaders are educators who have 5-15 years of experience, demonstrate passion for teaching, learning and leadership, and hold leadership potential. One or more Virginia educators have been selected each of the past several years, and these leaders are now presenting at annual conference and serving as leaders in our state-wide organization. In this 5-minute video, Peter Badalament from Massachusetts ASCD describes how the Emerging Leaders program supported his transition from "teacher leader" to "leader of teachers." More information here.

Update
VASCD on Capitol Hill

Daniel Smith (Va. Beach), Melanie Kay-Wyatt (Fredericksburg) and Laurie McCullough (VASCD) represented our affiliate at ASCD's legislative conference in Washington in January. They met with representatives from the offices of each Virginia legislator on Capitol Hill, urging reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and suggesting specific changes to standardized testing and accountability policies. See ASCD's 2015 legislative agenda here.
