An education isn't how much you've committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't.

Feature article

The demands of the 21st century require our students to prepare for college, career, and citizenship.  We have data, grades and test scores, but do we know what our students believe?  What do they dream about?  How do they develop the resilience that is needed to meet their goals?  Students from the graduating class of 2014 were asked to share their beliefs as they prepare for life after high school.  As we close another school year, it is reassuring to listen to the voices of our future leaders.

Erin is a member of the Panther Band and Stage Band at Bruton High School in York County. The BHS Stage Band entertained at the December VASCD conference reception.

I have a very special friend who means the world to me.  Cody is a special needs student in the high school I attend.  My best friend, Jessica, and I met Cody in band class in middle school, and since then we have watched Cody grow and blossom through music. Read more

When I was four, my grandpa gave me a teddy bear. As children, we are often given seemingly simple gifts that have potential to hold a lot of meaning, and this teddy bear was full of potential that four-year-old me could not understand. Read more

Performance Assessment on
the Front Burner

VaASCD supported the passage of House Bill 930, which reduces the number of SOL tests in science and social studies at the elementary and middle school levels. The intention of this legislative action is to reduce the pressure on teachers and students to spend inordinate amounts of time preparing for large-scale multiple choice tests, and to open the door for more authentic, performance based assessment practices that can be embedded in the teaching-learning process.

But there's a problem: most teachers don't have these alternative assessments. VaASCD is currently working with assessment experts and teachers who have been successfully using performance tasks and other alternative assessments to create professional development opportunities this fall that will assist teachers in this work. Stay tuned for details!
