The demands of the 21st century require our students to prepare for college, career, and citizenship. We have data, grades and test scores, but do we know what our students believe? What do they dream about? How do they develop the resilience that is needed to meet their goals? Students from the graduating class of 2014 were asked to share their beliefs as they prepare for life after high school. As we close another school year, it is reassuring to listen to the voices of our future leaders.
This I Believe by Erin Morrow
Erin is a member of the Panther Band and Stage Band at Bruton High School in York County. The BHS Stage Band entertained at the December VASCD conference reception.
I have a very special friend who means the world to me. Cody is a special needs student in the high school I attend. My best friend, Jessica, and I met Cody in band class in middle school, and since then we have watched Cody grow and blossom through music. Read more

Owen, a senior at Bruton High School, has been selected to receive the 2014 York County Outstanding Youth Scholarship for Community Service.

Lesley is a senior at York High School in Yorktown, VA. Lesley and her teddy bear will attend Virginia Commonwealth Univeristy in the fall.
When I was four, my grandpa gave me a teddy bear. As children, we are often given seemingly simple gifts that have potential to hold a lot of meaning, and this teddy bear was full of potential that four-year-old me could not understand. Read more
