Miss America visits the College
 | Nina Davuluri |
Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri visited the College on February 12 as part of the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Career night. She addressed an audience of more than 200 current and prospective students about the importance of STEM education in addition to her experiences in being named Miss America last fall.
Davuluri is speaking across the country to promote her platform of "Celebrating diversity through cultural competency." In addition to her comments on STEM education, she also talked about being the first Indian American to win the coveted title, meeting President Obama and the fact that she is a big fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek movies. When her reign comes to an end, Davuluri has plans to enroll in medical school with the goal to become a physician. She will help pay for her education with the more than $90,000 she has received in scholarships as part of her pageant participations.
The event was capped off with the chance for attendees to have their picture taken with Miss America on the red carpet as part of STEM Career Fair. Several of the College's transfer school partners were also on hand to share what it takes for students to graduate and enter into a STEM bachelor's degree program. The event was made possible in part through the generous support of Boeing and Visual Sound.
