You Can Do It
How many times have we been told, and have told ourselves, that 'we can do it' - whatever it is. And we CAN do it, but we cannot do it alone.
In our lifelong weight loss journey we have been given many tools that are designed to help us be successful in becoming healthier. But not all of this can be done on our own - we need to have helping hands from others.
We need assistance from parents, significant others, family, friends, colleagues, professionals and more. Maybe we never learned how to involve others in our efforts. Our culture makes it very clear that we need to be self-reliant. In fact, it is considered desirable to 'make it on our own'.
Our Bariatric Program at Saint Elizabeth is designed to provide each patient with the support and education needed to make this journey. We believe very strongly in our Patient Support Group which is open to all people, before, during and after surgery. Our purpose is to provide a 'safe place' for members to feel a connection and to share many things they have in common. The people around us may not have the skills or knowledge to understand what we've been through, but we trust those who have had weight loss surgery to be empathetic, encouraging, motivating and kind to each other.
We say that 'You Can Do It'. And we invite you to attend a Patient Support Group in your area. We exist for you, and we are here to give you that helping hand.
Have a happy and safe summer. You deserve it!
Danette Larkins, RN, BSN Bariatric Program Coordinator and Marilyn Wadum, RD Bariatric Nutrition Therapist
