 Celebrate Nutrition Month!

Marilyn Wadum, RD

Bariatric Nutrition Therapist

March is National Nutrition Month when we celebrate our health and focus on the importance of making informed choices.

This year's theme is "Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day." This includes developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

Does this sound familiar? For anyone who has had weight-loss surgery, this is a message we hear over and over again. The message gets old after awhile, so it is up to us to make and keep the message fresh.

What are we doing now to make each day the best day? How are we taking care of our bodies? Where do we put ourselves in our list of priorities?

We often hear patients say, "the surgery is just a tool - the rest we have to do ourselves." This is the reality - and it applies to everyone, not just to those who have had weight-loss surgery.

So what can we do to make our goals fresh?

  1. Get out and do something new - don't let the winter blues get you down.
  2. Try a new food - the same old food can get tiring.
  3. Reach out to a friend or family member - is there something you can do for them?
 Wishing good health to
each and every one of you!

 Seafood Chowder Made Easy

From the Recipe Box of Marilyn Wadum

-2 cups chicken broth (boxed or from cubes)

-1 tablespoon reduced fat margarine

-1/2 cup finely chopped onion

-2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced into 1/2- inch cubes

-2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped fine

-1 pound fish fillets (tilapia or haddock), cut into 1-inch pieces

-1/4 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed

-1/4 teaspoon black pepper

-2 cups skim milk

1.  Add chicken broth, margarine, onion, potatoes, carrots, fish, thyme and pepper to a large saucepan. Cover and bring broth to a boil over medium heat.

2.  Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until vegetables are tender and fish flakes easily with fork (about 10 - 12 minutes).

3.  Add milk. Cook chowder over medium heat, uncovered and stirring until chowder begins to bubble and is heated through.
