We had our first 2013 education and support follow- up meeting on January 15. I was blessed to have 19 people present.

We had a wonderful speaker, Leesa M. shared her experience and hope with fighting obesity and staying on a healthy track. Leesa has lost 170 lbs. in the past 2 years. She has a personal trainer who coaches her with her exercise plan. Leesa is planning on returning to a theme park this year to enjoy the park rides with her two nephews...something she could not do

two years ago.

Leesa, who is also a chef, shared lots of good cooking tips using spices, fruits and vegetables to make some mouthwatering recipes. There was good discussion and ideas about having Leesa do a cooking class in the future. Thank you Leesa!

Before the meeting I heard several people talking with one another. Kathleen R. said she joined a well-known diet plan group. Carolyn B. was starting a new exercise program with a friend. Someone brought up different places in Lincoln where you could consign or donate clothes that no longer fit. Kevin and his wife are headed to the Black Hills to be camp hosts this year. Kevin shares he could not enjoy this new adventure if he had not lost all of his weight and put his diabetes in remission.

Marie W, said, "we must forgive ourselves" if we have fallen down, get back up and start again. It is also okay to ask for outside help in our recovery program. A counselor, exercise trainer or support person may be very beneficial.

I found that being quiet and listening to all the enthusiasm and sharing in the room was a real motivator to me. I was simply amazed! What an incredible group of people I have found on my own journey.

Thanks everyone and keep coming back!

Making A Difference

Quite often I receive emails or phone calls from people that  had bariatric surgery in another town or state. They have relocated to the area and are looking for a follow-up surgeon as well as support and education meetings. I always invite them to attend our group at Saint Elizabeth and assist them in arranging follow-up care with a surgeon or primary care physician.

Our education and support groups are open to anyone who has had bariatric surgery. We encourage those who are preparing for surgery to attend. All of us need constant support and education to remind us of the lifestyle changes we committed to when we had surgery. Most of us struggle  from time to time, and it is reassuring to know there is a place where you are welcome to join those of us that are on the same journey!

Save the Date
