Know Your Lab Values

Most patients are at risk for some aspect of nutritional deficiency after surgery. At your annual check-up, ask your primary care doctor to evaluate your nutritional status. The following lab tests will assist you in knowing how you are doing:

Hemoglobin
Protein
Albumin
Vitamin D
Calcium
Vitamin B12

Taking vitamins, minerals, iron and protein supplements ensure best outcomes after surgery. Failure to do so can seriously compromise your health. If you have questions about what you should be taking or the appropriate dosage, talk with your family doctor and bariatric surgeon. Be in the know!

Wow! What a Great Meeting
16 support group members participated in the Hy-Vee nutrition and education tour in June. We learned about the NU-VAL scoring system 1 -100. The higher the score, the better the nutrition. For example: one cereal was rated at 10, the second at 25 and the healthier choice cereal at 37. A food products score is driven down by added salt, fats and sugar. Besides reading labels this is another tool to help all of us to choose wisely. Reach for 100!
