This Month's Featured Pool

Second Story Pool, Boca Grande

We all know that February is the month for lovers. Valentine's Day has come and gone, and I hope it was enjoyable for you.

February is also the month to love your pool. Take care of it by keeping it clean, changing the filters, and giving the cage and deck a light power wash.

If you have a salt generator, check the cells. Also, make sure you read your owner's manual for maintenance guidelines on your specific equipment. See the Featured Product section below for more information on maintaining your salt generator system.

Sincerely,

Contemporary Second-Story Pool
in Boca Grande

This unique second-story pool is designed and laid into the pattern of the deck and follows the shape of the
house.  It's design takes full advantage of the amazing views and incorporates the added feature of a built-in spa for perfect relaxation.

The pool features an infinity edge with no coping.  The decking and coping are made of the same material and the grout lines all line up. The shape of the pool follows the shape of the house.

The picture above shows the pool's location on the second story and how it perfectly fits in with the visual balance of the home.

DIY TIPS

Family-Friendly Yards...Part I, Kid Zones

We will share, in separate issues, different ways to transform your yard with features and materials that are enjoyed and accessible by everyone.

The things that kids enjoy outside are places to explore, run, and play. When thinking about how to create an outdoor space for kids, consider ways to inspire imagination.

Cording Landscape Design

The picture above shows a natural space that can easily be incorporated into a new or existing landscape design. A natural space can also grow as your children grow.

Cultivart Landscape Design

Small spaces can be enjoyed by all ages. Try to create multifunctional or flexible areas. The area in the picture above is an example of a flexible space with different types of surfaces. The shed or playhouse is on artificial lawn (durable and low maintenance) and is edged by a walkway where adults can relax while watching the kids play.

Professionals believe that kids today are exposed to far less outdoor play, and as a result, they have less self-esteem and creativity. It is also said that our first sensory experiences stick with us as memories--touch, smell, taste, and sight.  What sensory triggers do you have that bring back a strong memory?

Here are a few ideas for your kid-friendly landscaping:

1. Create mystery with twists and turns or a hidden path, which will encourage exploring.

2. Color and leaf variety will add textures and smells.

3. Create sound with a bubbling fountain, to draw people through the garden.

4. Have a place to sit among grasses and/or flowers.

5. Add rocks. Who doesn't like to play with rocks?

6. Create wonder and opportunity to expand expectations.

7. Welcome wildlife.

Maintaining
Your Hayward AquaRite Salt System

Regular maintenance of your salt generator system, like the Hayward AquaRite, is very important and now is a great time to do that.

Open and inspect the cell every 3 months or after cleaning your filter.
In areas where the water is hard and in pools where the water chemistry is out of balance, the cell may require periodic cleaning.

When servicing and cleaning the cell, turn the power off before removing the cell. Inspect it for scale formation or debris on the plates. If these are visible, flush with a high-pressure garden hose.

If additional cleaning is required, use a plastic or wood tool (do not use a metal tool) and scrap the deposits off of the plates. The accumulation of scale can be caused by the pool chemistry being out of balance. Check your owner's manual for the proper levels.

In the spring, when your system has not been in use, DO NOT turn on your system until the pool water chemistry has been brought to the proper levels.  (Refer to your owner's manual.)
