Kids are back to school... but the heat is still on!
It's back to school time and kids are meeting at bus stops or walking along the roadways. They're excited to be with their friends and probably not being as careful as they should be. Please make an effort to leave home a little earlier to make up for the reduced speeds posted in school areas and to watch out for the children that aren't watching out for you!
Speaking of safety issues, even though school is in session, the hot and humid days that we've experienced all Summer are still here. Adults and children are still using the pool and it's a good time to consider what options are available to make your pool safer for everyone to use. Best option? Never leave the kids in the pool without an adult who can swim in very close proximity. An accident can happen in a split second. Be aware and everyone can enjoy the pool!
Sincerely,
Pete Coccaro

Help the Monarch Butterfly in Your Own Backyard!

|
Monarch butterfly gets nectar from a Mexican sunflower. Photo by Suzanne DeJohn
|
From the time we were children, Monarch butterflies have been the easiest butterfly species to recognize. Their vibrant colors and wide habitat made them the memories of our childhood.
Lately, there have been a lot of articles and news stories about the round trip migration of the Monarch butterfly traveling from the Northern United States to Mexico - over 1500 miles- and how the monarch's populations are declining probably because of declining habitat. Why not add some plants to your landscape that will allow the Monarchs to use your home as a layover on their rigorous trip. Each life cycle has a different host plant or habitat: Milkweed for egg laying/caterpillar feeding, nectar plants for feeding, mud puddles for landing and water, trees and shrubs to roost in and flat rocks in sunny areas to keep them warm on chilly nights. Keep pesticides to a minimum and not only save the Monarchs but the Honey Bee, too. Visit the Gardener's Supply Company site for some interesting articles on "Saving the Monarch Butterfly" by Suzanne DeJohn, "Create a Monarch Waystation" by Marty Ross and "Garden Design: Create Planters and Raised Beds for Butterflies" by David Grist. Each will give you some great insight in how to create a butterfly haven in your backyard - whether your space is large or small. Then sit back and watch these marvelous travelers as they visit your home!

Deck Out Your Deck!
Gone are the days when Kool Deck and epoxy pebble coatings were the only choices available for lanai and pool deck surfaces. Today there is a variety of selections in a full range of price points and all create a cooler non-skid surface.
Following are some of our clients' favorites that we use:
Kool Deck - Still popular, it is a surface coating that is troweled over a base concrete layer. We offer it in four colors and will score it to create a block design. It significantly lowers the temperature of the concrete by about 20 degrees and is fairly easy to keep clean.
Spray Deck - is a decorative painted system designed to be installed over a concrete base. It resists mildew and stainingand is low maintenance.
Spray Deck has a large variety of color choices.
Standard Pavers - Natural stone pavers are Individual "bricks" of varying sizes, shapes and colors that can be laid in numerous patterns. "Standard" pavers havea density of 4000 psi, therefore more porous than the upgraded"Artistic Pavers".

Paver Samples with matching coping
|
Artistic Pavers - are manufactured to a density of 9000 psi which makes them very hard and non-porous to resist staining, algae and mildew. They're available in a full line of colors, shapes and sizes.
Travertine Pavers - Travertine is a natural rock similar to limestone and marble. It naturally absorbs water so it is non-slip. It is heat resistant, so cool underfoot, and comes in a variety of natural colors. As for durability...did you know the Coliseum in Rome is largely built of Travertine! | Travertine Paver Samples |
 | Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) wood decking |
Ipe Wood - (ee-pay) wood imported from South America is also called Brazilian Walnut. It is one of the densest hardwoods available, three times harder than cedar. Ipe has the same fire rating as concrete and steel, meaning it resists flames much longer than softer woods, and is so dense that it doesn't float in water. It is resistant to bugs, mildew and decay making it a good choice for pool decking.
 | Trex Composite Decking |
Trex® - Is an eco-friendly composite product made from an innovative blend of 95% recycled wood and plastic. It's available in more than a dozen colors and has a simulated wood grain. Trex decking resists termites, won't rot, warp, or splinter and never needs staining or painting.
