 Featured Pool...
The 8
The 8" raised spa is accented with mosaic tile to contrast with the paver deck. The combination fire and water bowl (also faced in mosaic tile) sits across from the walk-in sunledge. Architectural detail is accomplished with a tie beam and columns enclosure and a Mansard styled screen overhead.

Pete Coccaro

Whether you have a pool cleaning company servicing your pool or you do it yourself, it's good to know how to test your water. Pool water that has the proper chemical levels creates a safe environment for comfort and health.

The test kit is a good tool for every pool owner to have, because it is a quick and easy way to monitor your pool water. Some tips to remember:

1. Read precautions on all chemical labels
2. Keep test kit out of reach of children
3. Store test kit in a cool, dark place.
4. Replace reagents once each year
5. Do not dispose of solutions in your pool or spa
6. Rinse cells/tubes before and after each test
7. Take samples 18" below the water's surface
8. Hold bottle vertically when dispensing

If you're experiencing a problem with your water quality, you can always bring water samples to a local pool store to have it tested, too.

Sincerely,

Using Colorful Pots and Plants Can Add Warmth and Texture to Your Pool Area!

Sometimes the areas around a pool can be very sterile and lacking in warmth and color. Many pool decks stretch from house to pool cage without a break except for the pool itself. To add some softness and color consider potted plants.

Vary the sizes and color of the pots, or use all the same color and vary the flowers and plants to add color and texture. An easy way to do this is to use a variety of pots as "slipcovers". Just place your plant, still in its original pot, in the new decorative pot!  Group 3 - 5 pots of various sizes together to create a focal point. Don't forget to fertilize and water well. These mini-landscapes tend to dry out quickly. When the season changes, just replace the plants with new ones. The original plants can then be planted in the garden.

Think about using vertical spaces, too. Wall hung plant "pockets" can add visual color and interest to a blank wall.  Or use an old ladder (painted a bright color) to hold small potted plants. It can be placed anywhere, even near a kitchen door for an herb garden.  Make sure the ladder is sturdy by adding crossbars to keep the ladder from folding. You can even add shelves for a larger display area!

Local garden stores and online companies are filled with great products that you can use. If you need creative inspiration "surf the net"! There are millions of ideas and many have directions that are easy for even a beginner to follow.

Chemical Descriptions
& When to Test

This is a very brief overall view of chemical tests for pool water:

Test Daily:

Chlorine & Bromine:
When added to fresh water chlorine produces a powerful sanitizer. Overuse can cause eye irritation and strong chlorine odor. Bromine is also a sanitizer.

pH
pH shows whether water is acidic, neutral or basic (alkaline). It can be affected by some sanitizers and control is important for comfort, sanitizer efficiency and overall water balance.

Test Weekly:

Total Alkalinity is the measurement of the alkaline materials in your water that act as buffering agents to avoid changes in pH that could result in corrosion and staining.

At Nautilus Pools we give a starter kit to all new pool clients. Each kit comes with a variety of tools including a test kit. Read carefully the information that comes with the kit to avoid mishaps
