Editor's Letter,
June/July 2016

It has been a busy spring for us here at ActiveTravels! We are planning numerous summer trips to all kinds of exciting destinations like Iceland, Greece, Italy, UK, France, Seattle and the San Juan Islands, Oregon, Alaska, Kenya and Tanzania.

Add to that a nice article on our business just published last week in the Boston Herald. Here is the link

We also enjoyed a fun morning at our local high school, Newton North, at their Reality Fair, The Game of Life. Remember that board game? Each young adult receives a job and a salary upon their arrival and then they have the difficult task of figuring out how much they can spend on housing, if they could purchase a car (usually no, as Anthony at Honda Village said, "just take the MBTA!"), how much dining out will cost, and last, but certainly not least, what kind of vacations could they afford! We had a ton of fun meeting those kids and we did our best to encourage them to save so they can savor some of the best experiences of life!

More excitement is to come with our daughter's high school graduation this coming week. Gotta bring the tissues to that event! To celebrate, the whole family's heading down to Jamaica for a week of sun and fun.

Thank you for reading our June/July newsletter. It's chock full of information to share with you from exciting new trips in the North Woods of Maine, a tour to savor the wines and food of Portugal, excellent resorts of St John in the US Virgin Islands, and great new inns to check out in Martha's Vineyard.

This is a double issue for June and July. See you in August! Have a wonderful summer ahead.

Happy travels!

News from the Road:
North Woods, Maine

Those of you who have followed my travel writing career know that I return to Maine's North Woods as often as possible. All it takes is a 4-hour drive from Boston and I'm lost in a land of seemingly endless forest filled with mile-high mountains, immense lakes and too many ponds to count. The large swath of wilderness feels like a chunk of Alaska remarkably placed in our congested Northeast. I have paddled down the Allagash River, my tent almost trampled by moose in heat; white water rafted down the Class V rapid known as Cribworks on the Penboscot River; watched as a bear swam across remote Chesuncook Lake; relaxed under a waterfall on that signature canyon hike along the 100-Mile Wilderness Trail, Gulf Hagas; and mountain biked with Lisa last summer to all four newly built huts on the spectacular Maine Huts & Trails circuit. It has led to some of my favorite articles like this one for Sierra Magazine.

Now we're happy to report that ActiveTravels has joined forces with Northern Outdoors and Maine Huts & Trails to spread the word and encourage more people to follow in Thoreau's footsteps. We have designed two itineraries, one for families, one for a guys or girls getaway to a sampling of the most stunning spots in Maine's North Woods. Price starts at an affordable $403 per person for a 4-night stay. Do yourself a favor this summer and sample this special slice of adventure in your own backyard!

Itinerary #1:
Multisport Maine Wilderness Family Adventure
Guaranteed to Keep the Kids Happy!

Need some downtime with the family far away from computer screens, but loaded with some of the most exciting adventures Maine offers? Then we have the trip for you. This 5-day, 4-night itinerary includes some of our favorite adventures, including paddling the Dead River to the stunning Grand Falls and whitewater rafting down the Kennebec River. Highlights:
  • Paddle a canoe next to loons down the Dead River on the way to your first Maine hut, Grand Falls Hut.
  • Hike past the magnificent Grand Falls, where a wide ribbon of water rushes down the rocks
  • Swim in the natural pools of Grand Falls or learn to fly fish with a Registered Maine Guide.
  • Next stop on your trip is Northern Outdoors Adventure Resort in West Forks. Try an afternoon float trip or just swim in their pool or giant hot tub. Your home for tonight can be a Logdominium! Part condo, part log cabin, these units comfortably sleep up to 6 and feature a kitchenette or head to the full-service restaurant and brewery for meals.
  • The finale of your trip is a rip-roaring raft ride down the Kennebec River. Midway you'll enjoy a riverside cookout before you float the lower Kennebec Gorge back to the Forks.
  • Pricing: Ranges from $448-$678 per person depending on number of people and time of week. This includes lodging, shuttles, and all activities.
Itinerary #2:
Bonding with the Boys!
The Ideal Guys Getaway in the Maine Wilderness

Ditch the crowds and immerse yourself in the wilderness on this 4-night testosterone-pumping itinerary in the Maine Woods. Here are some experiences to look forward to with your buddies:
  • Begin at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center in Carabasset Valley and pick up your mountain bikes. Ride the rugged New England terrain on carved trails that lead you up to Stratton Brook Hut, the newest property of Maine Huts & Trails.
  • Grab a brew and view the magnificent Bigelow Range of 4,000-foot peaks from the Vista.
  • Climb a mountain in the Bigelow Range and swim in the marvelous Stratton Brook Pond surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks.
  • Mountain bike down and begin the next adventure on your itinerary and head to the Northern Outdoors Adventure Resort.
  • Enjoy an exhilarating day on the whitewater rafting down the Kennebec River. Try the Kennebec River Beer on the back deck of your cabin and relive the moments of your trip.
  • Pricing: Ranges from $403-$640 per person based on 4 people. This includes lodging and all activities.
Contact ActiveTravels to find out more and get the detailed itineraries. Of course, we can customize these experiences according to your needs. We can't wait to show you this outstanding destination. It is near and dear to our hearts and sure to inspire you!

Hotels We Love:
St. John

Only a few miles east of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John has virtually nothing in common with its overdeveloped neighbor. More than 60 percent of the island and its surrounding waters comprise Virgin Islands National Park, a mecca in the Caribbean for the active traveler. Hiking trails weave through the tropical terrain past some 800 species of plants. On the shore, white-sand beaches lead to coral-covered bays (Trunk and Leinster are two of the best) where snorkelers spend hours mesmerized by the vivid neon fish. Here are three properties our members love:

If you're looking for an exclusive seaside refuge, Caneel Bay is for you. Located on a former sugar plantation on a 170-acre estate, this spot is truly sweet. The resort is set on a peninsula and offers seven beaches (one for every day of the week!), 2,000 types of plants, including 80 different kinds of palm trees, and four restaurants interspersed throughout. This is a laid back kind of place but for those with boundless energy, activities include tennis on their 11 courts, sailboarding, snorkeling, boating, art classes, garden walks, pool and fitness center and movie nights. A kids center offers fun experiences like pirate treasure hunts and magic shows to entertain their young guests. Don't miss the opportunity to go hiking in the National Park before your beach-time nap.

The Westin St John is really the polar opposite of Caneel Bay. Rather than offer a quiet, exclusive feel, the Westin is a more traditional luxury resort. They boast the largest pool on the island, flanked by whirlpools and numerous chaise lounges and umbrellas. They offer a beach from which you can swim (though most people opt for the pool) and try all the water sports you desire. Sunset sails and island tours depart from their pier.

This adults-only resort (though they allow kids in the summertime) is situated on a rocky point overlooking the stunning sea. Just across the harbor from the ferry dock in downtown Cruz Bay, Gallows Point is well situated for those who want to walk to town for shops and restaurants but still enjoy a beachfront locale. The one-bedroom condos with living room and kitchens, offer a perfect base for exploring the island (renting a car is suggested). Or, you can just walk down to it's patch of beach and snorkel with turtles and colorful fish right from the resort.

Call ActiveTravels if you're interested in traveling to St. John sometime soon!

Tour Operators We Recommend:
Sagres Vacations

We were very happy to meet Marco Fernandes at a recent local travel event. Marco, after having spent years designing trips for Collette Vacations, opened up his own travel agency and tour operation with his wife and business partner, Fatima, in their home town of Fall River, Massachusetts. This area in and around New Bedford is also home to many Portuguese who have emigrated to the States. Sagres Vacations offers Marco and Fatima's incredible expertise about everything Portugal for customized trips as well as organized tours. We are thrilled to have met them as they can offer our members a knowledge of all the regions of Portugal, from the beach towns of the Algarve to the wine country of Douro Valley to the wonderful yet relatively undiscovered islands of the Azores.

They still have some spots open on this upcoming trip: Wine and Culinary Journey in Portugal. Here's what you'll experience on the tour:
  • 8 nights lodging in Porto, Douro & Lisbon
  • Tour in Porto including dinner with Fado show
  • Wine Tour and Tastings in Douro Valley
  • Culinary experiences in Douro Valley
  • Tour Lisbon with an expert in Portuguese culture
  • Traditional lunch in Lisbon
  • Roundtrip airfare from Boston to Lisbon
  • Dates: October 7-16, 2016
  • Prices begin at $3,299 per person
  • The Detailed Itinerary
Please contact ActiveTravels if you'd like to find out more information and reserve your spot on the tour.

Tried & True Travel Tips:
A Reminder to Acquire Global Entry

Longer than expected security lines at airports this spring only emphasizes the importance of having TSA PreCheckThat way, you can hopefully avoid long wait times. But even acquiring TSA PreCheck does not always guarantee you will get to go through the coveted lane. The reason why we recommend Global Entry, the US Customs and Border Protection program that allows you to swiftly pass the lines at Customs when re-entering the US. Pay the $100 fee, also good for a five-year span, fill out the application online, and wait for an interview at one of their airport locations (which can take up to six months at some locations like Boston's Logan Airport). Once approved, you simply proceed to a Global Entry kiosk, scan your passport, verify your fingerprint, and off you go.

Here's the kicker. Enrolling in Global Entry also qualifies you for TSA PreCheck as a "Trusted Traveler." Once you receive your new Global Entry ID card, enter your Trusted Traveler number into your airline reservations and frequent flyer accounts. Look for the listing called "Known Traveler ID" and be sure your name on the Global Entry ID matches your airline profile. Do this
correctly and, according to Ross Feinstein, Press Security for the TSA, you're more apt to be chosen for the TSA PreCheck line than those who only have TSA PreCheck.

Quick Escape:
Martha's Vineyard: New Properties to Visit

We were fortunate to take several vacations to the Winnetu Oceanside Resort on Martha's Vineyard when the kids were younger. A short stroll to glorious South Beach, it will always be our recommendation for families headed to the island.

For couples, however, there have been a number of recently debuted options on the Vineyard. The Wesley Hotel, the last of the grand Victorian hotels in Oak Bluffs, is now part of the Lark Hotels portfolio. After an extensive renovation, the 95-room property is being called Summercamp. It's one of three hotels Lark will begin operating on the Vineyard this summer.

A Victorian home built in 1892 by Captain Charles W. Fisher is now an 8-room inn called The Sydney in the heart of Edgartown.

Just down South Water Street is the new 15-room inn, The Christopher , styled in a Caribbean-blue color scheme. Enjoy the Edgartown harbor nearby as well as numerous shops and restaurants at your doorstep.

Over in Vineyard Haven, the former Doctor's House is now the Nobnocket Boutique Inn. Innkeepers at The Platinum Pebble in West Harwich began renovations in January on this historic home built on a bluff in Vineyard Haven in 1908, originally a doctor's home and office.
