Annual Fuel Efficiency/Emissions Data Gathering
|
We are still seeking fuel efficiency data for the calendar year 2013 as part of ATAC's annual input into the reporting for Canada's Action Plan to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Aviation. Thank you to the many operators that have already provided their data. We encourage those of you that have not already done so to please forward to Les Aalders your 2013 data as soon as possible.

NRC-TC-FAA 100LL Fuel Workshop
|
ATAC participated in a 100LL Fuel Workshop facilitated by TC and FAA and hosted by NRC at their facilities in Ottawa in March. The focus was on 100LL Fuel and its availability for now and the foreseeable future as well as alternative fuels under development and testing in North America and Europe. This fuel is key to the operation of piston aircraft used throughout our industry especially within the flight training segment as well as operators of radial engines. The presentations will be posted in the ATAC Members Only section of our website under the Flight Training Maintenance section.

ATAC Participation at World Airline Training Symposium (WATS) april 2014
|
ATAC was well represented at the WATS conferences with presentations from Joan Williams, Chair, Ottawa Aviation Services - Canadian perspective on pre-employment funding, incorporating tuition tax credits; Lynne McMullen, Chair of Aviation, Seneca College, describing deficiencies seen by airlines in new hire pilots; and Wayne Gouveia, Vice President General Commercial Aviation at ATAC placed a large amount of emphasis on supporting the implementation of SMS within members using the ATAC SMS Toolkit. Key themes at WATS included: cultures in aviation training, UAVs, increase of standards in maintenance training and pilot shortages.

Ontario Flight Schools Working Group - MPP Awareness Campaign
|
The research program coordinated through ATAC is winding down after 2 months of work by student Lisa Aalders. Research identified key issues with the Private Career College regulation and facilitated 20 meetings with local MPPs in Ontario. Issues identified relate to the cost, scope and frequency of mandatory audits, the encroachment of PCC on the regulatory oversight of Transport Canada and arbitrary power of the MTCU with lack of understanding of flight schools business.

 |
As of April 1, 2014, CATSA increased the number of checked bags that it opens to resolve potential alarms at the orders of Transport Canada.
ATAC's Security Committee met with CATSA on March 19, 2014. The short term fix is through:
- Advising passengers of the new change, and
- Educating counter staff on potential problems.
A longer term legislative fix is likely a year away. Transport Canada has begun a public consultation with travellers on the prospect of locks on bags being broken to facilitate search.
CATSA provided ATAC with communications material. This material was sent to ATAC's Security Committee.
