Santa Claus Has His Checklist, and You Should Too
Charitable giving is on many people's minds during the holidays, but many times the season can be so hectic that something important to you may get lost in the end of year hustle and bustle. Here are some easy ways to make the remainder of your 2014 charitable giving impactful:
- Remember, all charitable gifts that qualify for a charitable deduction in 2014 must either be received by the charities of your choice by December 31, 2014 or be postmarked by that date.
- Be mindful of stock transfers, as there is some lag time between when you request the transfer and when the charity receives it. Your tax deduction is based on when it is received by the charity.
- Consider a gift of stock with long-term appreciation (more than 12 months) when making charitable gifts. Many charities have the ability to handle these types of gifts and since nonprofit organizations do not pay capital gains tax, it is one of the most efficient charitable giving vehicles available.
- December is a month where many companies give their raises or annual bonuses. Consider setting aside a portion of your good fortune for the benefit of others.
- Giving through a Donor Advised Fund from community foundations (like The Catholic Foundation) are designed to help donors participate in charitable giving and still benefit from significant tax advantages. Your tax deduction is based on when you place gifts in your fund and you retain the right to recommend the recipients at a time that is most convenient.
