Greetings!

I want to extend a HUGE thank-you to everyone who attended the 2012 Local Food Road Show events! Local food connections were strenghtened by over 450 people participating in the regional food network. Thank you for shopping locally this summer! Farmers markets are closed for the season but you can call farmers for fall/winter crops. Also read up on Harvesting and Storing Vegetables.

Burning Food Questions

Smiley face with question marks

We're not talking about the turkey you left in the oven too long. We have burning questions to ask YOU about your consumer experiences with locally grown food. We'll use your responses to increase consumer information efforts in 2013.

Please answer our 10 burning food questions.

(You can ask us how long to leave the turkey in the oven later.)

Tri-State Fruit & Vegetable
Growers Symposium: Friday, Dec 7, 2012

Explore and apply new research in horticulture and viticulture from University Extension specialists and experienced local growers at the Tri-State Fruit and Vegetable Growers Symposium on Friday, December 7, in Sioux City, Iowa. Nebraska State Climatologist Al Dutcher will present research on the future implications of extreme weather and climate change on agricultural production. Afternoon session topics include irrigation, fertigation, frost protection, soil nutrient management, plasticulture, and harvesting wine grapes. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn successful farm and orchard strategies from experienced growers and browse vendor displays.

The symposium will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Bev's on the River Conference Center. The cost to register is $35 and includes lunch. For more information and to register contact Woodbury County Extension at (712) 276-2157 or download the registration form here.

Save the Dates: Good Agricultural Practices and Food Safety Plan Workshops

ISU Extension's On Farm Food Safety Team is offering a new program series for those wishing to expand their farm markets or those interested in growing food products for direct or wholesale sales. This program is designed to provide on farm food safety training for every size fruit and vegetable producer. Level 1 and 2 will be offered in Sioux City in 2013.

Level 1: Saturday, March 2, 2013

Farmers who provide food direct to consumers through community-supported agriculture (CSA) or farmers' markets or are considering retail foodservice sales will be trained in good agriculture best practices and market considerations.

Level 2: Saturday, March 9, 2013

Farmers considering sales to retail foodservices, such as grocers, restaurants, hospitals, and other institutions, and those interested in adding value to fresh produce and selling products in a convenience form will complete their written food safety plan in this workshop to provide food safety assurances to buyers.
Happy Fall!
