Commissioner Freeland Visits CONNECT
Leaders
Department of Higher Education Commissioner Richard Freeland joined the Presidents, Chancellor, and top leaders from the five CONNECT colleges and universities on January 29 to learn how the institutions are working together to save money, promote college attendance and completion, improve workforce alignment, increase interest and achievement in science and technology, and foster civic engagement.
Now in its tenth year, CONNECT is the only consortium in the state that focuses on public higher education and brings together all three segments of the Commonwealth's higher education system: community colleges, state universities, and UMass. Its mission is to foster the accessibility, quality, and affordability of higher education, and to advance the educational, cultural, and economic life of the Southeastern Massachusetts region.
Stated Commissioner Freeland, "CONNECT is an example regionally, as the Vision Project is statewide, of how we are knitting the system together so that we can act in a more unified way to reach public higher education's goals." In support of Governor Patrick's proposal to add $252 million in higher education funding in FY14, the Commissioner commented, "Massachusetts needs the most educated citizenry and workforce in the nation. To achieve that goal, you have to invest in public higher education." |

State Leaders Urge Veterans to GO PUBLIC!
On January 10, 2013, Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray, Veterans Services Secretary Coleman Nee, and Congressman Stephen Lynch (8th District MA) joined CONNECT campus leaders and students at Bristol Community College in Fall River. The goals: to promote the Commonwealth's commitment to veterans and to encourage veterans to use their Post-9/11 G.I. Bill benefits at Massachusetts' public colleges and universities.
Seventy people filled the auditorium as Lt. Governor Murray pointed out that the Commonwealth's public colleges and universities are educating half of the returning servicemen and women who pursue higher education. The five CONNECT campuses collectively serve over 1,200 veterans.
Three Southeastern Massachusetts students--Jared Oliver of UMass Dartmouth, Ashley Gavin of Massasoit Community College, and Adam McElroy from Bridgewater State University--spoke about their experiences of enrolling in public higher education upon their return from service and praised the colleges and universities for the support they received in making the transition from military to academic life. |
