Veterans:  We Want You to "Go Public!"

go publicOn January 10, 2013, 4-5:30 PM, Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray and Veterans Services Secretary Coleman Nee will join CONNECT campus leaders for a GO PUBLIC! event for prospective students who are military veterans. The goal of the event, at Bristol Community College in Fall River, is to send a unified message to veterans in the region: We want you to become our students.

"Veterans of all eras have protected our country, and here in Massachusetts we are committed to ensuring our veterans gain access to the services they have rightfully earned," said Lieutenant Governor Murray. The five CONNECT campuses collectively serve over 1,200 veterans.

All area veterans, active service members, their families, and professionals who serve veterans are invited to the event. Register to attend on the CONNECT website.

The GO PUBLIC! program is part of a statewide initiative to promote the academic excellence and value of public higher education. The January 10 event will feature three student veterans who will share their personal stories about making the transition from military service to college life. Veterans' services coordinators from the five CONNECT colleges and universities -- Cape Cod, Bristol, and Massasoit Community Colleges, Bridgewater State University, and UMass Dartmouth - will be present to answer questions about academic and career training opportunities.

CONNECT Colleges Announce One-Stop Access to Interns

On JanuaryTom et al 7, 2013, leaders from the five CONNECT colleges and universities in Southeastern Massachusetts met with the presidents of the region's Chambers of Commerce at Taunton Holiday Inn to discuss higher education's role in regional workforce and economic development.

The first order of business was the launch of the CONNECTLink internship portal. The portal will give the region's employers one-stop access to the student talent of the five colleges and universities.

C WallThe idea for the CONNECTLink Internship Portal arose in response to employer requests at CONNECT's November 2010 Economic Summit. CONNECTLink has three goals: to increase the number of internship listings at each of the five campuses, to expand the population of students who participate in internships while in college, and to build the number of students finding employment in their fields upon graduation.

"That's the role of public higher education," stated  CONNECT Chair and Massasoit Community College President Charles Wall. "To meet the needs of our region, and to meet the needs of our students."

Posting jobs is a two-stc Cooneyep process; employers first have to set up a profile, and then they can post individual job and internship listings. Approvals are determined by the individual policies at each of the campuses.

The CONNECTLink Internship Portal can be found on the CONNECT website.
