SE MA STUDENT VETERANS ENCOURAGE FELLOW VETS TO "GO PUBLIC!"

On Thursday, January 10, 2013, CONNECT will sponsor a dedicated GO PUBLIC! event for prospective students who are military veterans. The event, at Bristol Community College in Fall River, 4:00-5:30PM, will send a unified message to veterans in the region:  We want you to join us as students.

The program will be hosted by Lt. Governor Timothy Murray. Veterans Services Secretary Coleman Nee will also address attendees, and BCC President Dr. John Sbrega will provide introductions.

"Massachusetts is proud to lead the nation in serving our veterans," said Secretary Nee.  "As the new Post-9/11 GI Bill has taken effect, we have seen an explosion in our student veterans' population." The five CONNECT campuses collectively serve over 1,200 veterans.

The GO PUBLIC! program is part of a statewide initiative to promote the academic excellence and value of public higher education. The January 10 event will feature three student veterans who will share their personal stories about making the transition from military service to college life.

Following the student presentations, there will be breakout sessions on "Choosing a Career that Pays" and "Myths and Misperceptions About Benefits."

Veterans' services coordinators from the five CONNECT colleges and universities-- Cape Cod, Bristol, and Massasoit Community Colleges, Bridgewater State University, and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth-will provide information about the educational benefits available to veterans and the supports and services offered by the campuses.

All area veterans, active service members, their families, and professionals who serve veterans are invited to the event.
