CONNECT Joins New England Undergraduate Symposium on Sustainability

On Saturday, December 1, 2012, Bridgewater State University will host the 11th Annual New England Undergraduate Symposium on Sustainability and the Environment. CONNECT is now a Symposium Sponsor, meaning that the $15 registration fee will be WAIVED for all attendees from CONNECT institutions (Bristol, Cape Cod, and Massasoit Community Colleges, Bridgewater State University, and UMass Dartmouth). 40-50 undergraduate posters and over 120 students, faculty, and guests representing public and private colleges and universities from New England are expected. Faculty from across the region are encouraged to invite their students to submit an abstract and give a poster presentation. Projects can be proposed, in-progress, or completed work, and may represent the work of classes, individuals, or teams of students. Abstracts will be due on Monday, November 19th. Please email Ed Brush ([email protected]) to be included in the "Call for Abstracts".

CONNECT Colleges Host STEM Meetings

In November and December, four of CONNECT's insitutions are hosting meetings of the Southeastern Massachusetts/Cape and Islands STEM Network. The meetings will bring K-12 and college educators and community stakeholders together to address the issue of improving the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) achievement of our students at all levels. Attendees will work on developing a robust STEM plan for their communities, connect with colleagues, learn about model programs, and find resources to build STEM initiatives. For instance, at the Cape Cod Community College  gathering on November 1, attendees learned what is happening with STEM in Dennis-Yarmouth, Barnstable, and Sandwich, and met exhibitors including AAUW, Amgen-Bruce Wallace, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Jr. Tech, and Zephyr Education Foundation. Resources from the SE MA STEM Network  highlighted included a brand-new Corporate Sponsor Program, STEM Directory, Career Exploration website, and technical assistance.

  • "Go Public!" in Plymouth a Success

With visions of their dream colleges in mind, 450 high school students and their parents gathered at Plymouth North High School on October 3 for the kickoff of "Go Public," a statewide campaign promoting Massachusetts' public colleges and universities. Hosted by Senate President Therese Murray, the event featured student guest speakers from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Massasoit Community College, and Bridgewater State University. The leaders of all five CONNECT colleges and universities were present to answer questions. Prospective applicants had the opportunity to meet admissions officers, learn about the application process and financial aid, and hear about major and job choices that make the investment in higher education worthwhile.

    Go Public Stage

Higher Education Commissioner Richard Freeland stated in a press release, "Our goal with this effort is to make sure that students who look to public high education are ready for the academic rigor of our programs and are excited about the many opportunities that await them at our campuses across the Commonwealth."

A special "Go Public" event focusing on Veterans will be held November 8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Bunker Hill Community College in Charleston. Admission representatives from the CONNECT colleges will be present, and prospective college applicants of all ages are encouraged to attend.
