BioTech and Life Sciences Summit 

On June 13 at Bridgewater State University, the CONNECT CEOs invited industry and economic development leaders to a discussion of Life Sciences workforce needs. Lance Hartford, executive director of MassBioEd, presented research outlining training needs of life sciences companies in Southeastern Massachusetts. Panelists represented top regional BioTech employers Organogenesis, PrimeraDX, and Smithers Viscient. A few of the take-aways:

  • There are opportunities for jobs at the associate's, bachelor's, and graduate degree levels;
  • Regulatory compliance, Good Lab Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices, and quality assurance and report writing are areas of high need;
  • Internships are a great way for employers and industry to partner.

Advanced Manufacturing Meeting Scheduled for August 8

 

The second meeting in the CONNECT series of high-level discussions promoting workforce alignment in Southeastern Massachusetts will focus on Advanced Manufacturing. The meeting, being organized in partnership with the Commonwealth Corporation, will take place Thursday, August 8, at 8 a.m.(registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.) at UMass Dartmouth's Advanced Technology & Manufacturing Center in Fall River. Registration will open July 8 on the CONNECT website.

Southeastern Massachusetts employers can connect with interns from all five CONNECT campuses (Bridgewater State, Bristol, Cape Cod, and Massasoit Community Colleges, and UMass Dartmouth) through CONNECTLink, the one-stop internship portal. This FREE online service allows businesses to enter their postings in one place to be fed automatically to all five schools for students to access (upon approval from the individual campuses). University of Massachusetts Dartmouth - Freedom Festival

July 3, 2013 (Rain date July 5), 6:15 p.m.

The Bristol County Savings Bank joins UMD and the town of Dartmouth in sponsoring the eighth annual Freedom Festival, an alcohol-free, family oriented event featuring great music and fireworks.The fun begins at 6:15 with a concert by the Pop/Latin band Santa Mamba, followed by Rock/Jazz/Zydeco-oriented Entrain, and at 9:15, patriotic songs from UMD's a capella group, Mental Notes. Guests may arrive any time after 3 p.m. to find seating and enjoy concession stands selling a variety of foods, beverages, and souvenirs. For more information, visit the UMD event site.  

 

Massasoit Community College - Arts Affair Ribbon Winners Exhibition

August 5 - September 6, 2013; Reception September 6, 5 - 6:30 p.m.

This is the eighteenth year that the Arts Affair event will be held at Marina Bay in Quincy (August 3 - 4). Approximately 200 works will be on display, representing more than 17 local art associations and groups, with media ranging from oil and acrylic, watercolor, and drawing to mixed media, sculpture, and photography. Award-winning works in these categories will then move to Massasoit's Akillian Gallery on August 5. Cape Cod Community College - Summer of Science

August 12 - 16, 2013, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily

 

For the fourth summer, 4C's is hosting a hands-on weeklong science and technology program for students entering grades 6,7, and 8. This year's "Summer of Science" will explore electricity and magnetism, computer science, and robotics. Students will explore real-world problem-solving scenarios, work in teams on design challenges, use computer-based data collection and analysis tools, and have the chance to really "do" science with highly trained and experienced teachers. Every day will be packed with opportunities to learn, explore, and make new friends with a similar interest in science and technology! Bridgewater State University - Ed Tech Day 2013

The BSU Teaching and Technology Center's sixth annual conference celebrating teaching with technology best practices is back! Seminars and workshops are scheduled throughout the day and are being presented by faculty and administrators from BSU and the other CONNECT institutions. Learn about "Moodle in Minutes," "Using Technology to Facilitate Film Usage in the Classroom," "Flipping a Developmental Writing Class," and many other topics. The keynote speaker is Matthew Ragan, an expert on academic technology from Arizona State University, with a presentation on "Blueprints Build Skyscrapers." View the full schedule here. Bristol Community College - Grand Opening of the New Workforce Institute

 

Bristol Community College will debut its Workforce Institute this August, creating a new, one-stop service for the business community in the greater Fall River area. Expanding on the college's Center for Workforce and Community Education, the new institute will include services such as civic engagement, cooperative education, and other programs that can provide a boost to local businesses. The center was expanded based on input from the business community, who expressed a need for interns, real-life experience, customer service training, and other services. Theresa Romanovich, formerly the dean of the BCC New Bedford Campus, was recently appointed the associate vice president of workforce development at the college and has played a pivotal role in expanding these services.
