CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Friday, January 29th - Golf Outing Tuesday, February 2nd - Member Happy Hour Tuesday, February 16th - Tallahassee Trip
What is going on with this weather? One night I'm sleeping in a sweatshirt; the next day I'm wearing flip flops! I must however acknowledge for the second time this year Frank Wallmeyer's bug scraper/shoe scraper/ice scraper (one of the dozen I've acquired over the past 8 years) having been crucial in order to get to work Wednesday morning. Last week we heard from local real estate mogul Toney Sleiman about his outlook for the market, as well as the various projects we can expect to see from his company in the near future. Mr. Sleiman drew a crowd of 70 and he hinted at new plans being underway for a completely private re-design of the Jacksonville Landing without reliance on public funds. Also, when he heard Walter Smith announce our upcoming Tallahassee trip Feb 16th (Details in the newsletter) he offered to try and convince the governor to meet with us if he's in town.
This week marks our first event outside the weekly meeting with our monthly golf outing at North Hampton on Friday. I'm getting excited to join Nico and the group just typing now, and the weather looks to be perfect! (Assuming they get this one right) Our illustrious Program Chairperson Penny Kievet has secured Rena Coughlin, CEO of Non-profit Center of NE FL as our speaker this week. Amongst her many accomplishments, it's worth noting Mrs. Coughlin served as the Co-Chair of Mayor Curry's transition committee last year. Also next week we'll begin Super Bowl week in the zone with our 2016 Kickoff Reception at the River Club on Tuesday for happy hour. It's not a ticketed event, simply an opportunity to gather with other members for a great time with light hors d'oeuvres and River Club "member" pricing (ex. Jameson Irish whiskey- approx. $4). We have room for about 50 people so RSVP to ME below ASAP.
***We're relocating for 1 week on February 10th, our luncheon will be downtown at the Double Tree Hotel (Former Crown Plaza) due to maintenance in the banquet rooms at San Jose.***
Are you looking for more visibility and branding for your business? Would you like more than just a once-a-year spotlight speech to exhibit at the club meetings? Then check out our new "Lunch Sponsor" opportunities! This year we're committed to:
Providing programs that by names or titles are recognizable and consistent draws
Taking ownership of the lunch buffet by choosing the menu each week
Designating some tables "Discussion focused" selecting topics to spark conversation
Providing multiples channels of information delivery, rather than just verbal announcements mid-meeting (Table take-ones)
Tailoring the meeting to a fun and professional presentation
In conjunction with these efforts, we will begin projecting a PowerPoint weekly from 11:30-12:30 listing the speaker & upcoming functions/events as well as up to 5 (4+spotlight) member lunch sponsors in between the various slides. The spotlight speaker of course receives theirs free. You create your slide and send it to us, so it's whatever you want it to be, and it's only $25!
Contact Fred Allison, Hal Smith, or Mike Russo for more details:
Our first SBMC golf outing of 2016 will be on Friday, January 29th at the Golf Club at North Hampton. Our first tee time is at 12:00 noon and we have space for 32 players in total. Cost will be $40.00 per participant and includes range balls for your warm-up.
The Golf Club at North Hampton is a signature course of golf legend Arnold Palmer and renowned course architect Ed Seay. It is carved into the natural surroundings and framed by spring-fed lakes lined with coquina boulders. The wild grass and rolling dunes capture the feel of a Scottish links-style course. Ornamented with bridges the high elevation course offers a perfect combination of the area's natural beauty and the best of golf course architecture. All of these unique design features, coupled with the crowned fairways and fine sugar sand and coquina shell bunkers help to make North Hampton one of Florida's most interesting and original courses.
"The Golf Club at North Hampton is the 7th Best Course you can Play in Florida." - Golf Week
So, come join your fellow SBMC members and friends for the first round of golf of 2016! To reserve your spot(s) contact Nico Hogeveen at (904) 403-6754 or send an email to [email protected].

TALLAHASSEE TRIP - Tuesday, February 16th
Southside Business Men's Club will be traveling to Tallahassee to meet with our legislative members, in particular the Hon. Charles McBurney, the Hon. Lake Ray, and the Hon. Paul Renner. We also plan to tour the capitol, sit in on a session from the gallery, and we are trying to arrange a meeting with Governor Scott. The trip is on February 16th leaving at 8:00 am and returning 8:00 pm. Cost will be $40 for members and $50 for non-members. We are working on a place for all of us to have lunch also. More details to follow.
There are 2016 spotlight speaker dates available! The book is at the sign-in table at each meeting.
This is free to all members in good standing and gives you the opportunity to talk about your business, family, interests, or anything else you would like to talk about for five minutes. You are also able to put out business cards, flyers, or informational materials on the tables to showcase your business.
Pick your date before they fill up!
We also ask for volunteers to help us start our meetings to get us thinking about what is really important and what is behind whatever success we have achieved - God and Country.
If you have a calling to lead us in prayer/invocation or the pledge of allegiance, please either call or sign up in the spotlight speaker book.
