PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Tim Howe, President
Southside Business Men's Club
(904) 813-8950

It's Sunday morning at about 9am, and you just received the weekly SBMC newsletter.

After reading my President's Message...with excitement...many of you will soon be heading to the SBMC Tailgate party at the big Jaguars sporting event!!  Some are already at the location, setting up for today's festivities.  These SBMC committee members are working like Santa's elves to put on one of our more popular social events!

This is a full-service event:  Starting at 10am, the Players Grille is cooking up some traditional tailgate fair, D.J. John (Hamel) will be spinning the tunes, and Soon-To-Be-World-Famous bartender: Scott Schilbrack, is creating some truly delicious Bloody Marys!  There will also be kegs of beer, but you'll have to manually operate that yourself...think back to your college days!

The Jags/Texans game starts at 1pm.  This is an important match for both teams, to decide who will pick first in next year's College Draft Day!!  Yes, we all know the Jags are terrible for yet another season.  But at this point, nobody's going to stadium to see if we're securing the home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  We're going for the game day experience, and to have some good old SBMC camaraderie.

Once again this is a successful event:  our allotment of game tickets have all been sold.  There are no 'walk up' SBMC tailgate/party tickets available, as we had to turn in numbers for the caterers. Conversely, I'm sure there will be PLENTY of game tickets available at the Jags box office.

I'm so excited, that I'm cutting my message short to go have some fun!

See you there!!

VETERAN'S DAY PARADE FLOAT
We resume work Tuesday, October 20th at 5:30pm, at the Central Park Office/Industrial Park, 3728 Philips Highway #304, Jacksonville (near the corner of Emerson and Philips).  This is the same location as last year.

**We extend an invitation to new club members who are not familiar with the parade float project.  Come out and see the effort behind what makes the SBMC one of Jacksonville's finest clubs.
A Volunteer sign-up book will be available at each Club meeting to assist in work planning but even if you cannot sign up, we'd love to have you join us. Remember each time you volunteer your name gets dropped into a drawing for a pair of Jaguar tickets - with the highly sought after Parking Pass!

**Food and drinks will be provided.  As always, bring your own adult beverages, if desired.

We are also looking for volunteers willing to provide dinner for the work crew.  Many thanks to Club President Tim Howe and his lovely wife Annie for offering to cater the evening of October 20th. If interested in catering future evenings please contact Valerie Segraves at (904) 307-6083 or
[email protected]

**We need: four U.S. Army field uniforms, preferably plain old olive drab jackets/shirts.
So all your Army veterans in the Club, please check your old footlocker and see if you have something we can borrow.  As always, we standby to answer any questions!

**Also, we're looking for parade participants.  This year's parade is Wednesday, November 11th (there is no Club meeting that day).

Questions? Please contact:

Chairman:  Charles Armstrong, [email protected] or (813) 545-9862
Co-Chair:  Hal Smith, [email protected] or (904) 881-1036

MONTHLY GOLF OUTING
MONTHLY GOLF OUTING FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13th AT
 OAK MARSH ON AMELIA ISLAND.

Are you ready for another round of golf at Amelia Island Plantation? In July we played the Ocean Links course, this time, on Friday, November 13th it will be the Oak Marsh course. Many players consider this one to be the better of the two courses, although without the direct ocean views. For only $60.00 (+tax) I expect our 32 spots to sell out very quickly. It will give you green/cart fees and range balls prior to your round. We'll have a shotgun start at 12:30PM.

The Oak Marsh course is one of the truly classic Pete Dye-designed golf courses in the world. Built in 1972 it's noted for its tight fairways and small greens, meandering along serpentine salt marsh creeks and through the moss draped heritage oaks for which Amelia Island is famous. At par 72, this 6,500-yard course has 14 holes with water hazards and numerous bulk-headed greens. A variety of bunkers add to the challenge and a natural approach has been maintained with the use of coquina shell cart paths, native plant life and preserved habitats for the local wildlife.

Oak Marsh is included in Golf Digest's prestigious list of the "Top 75 Resort Courses in the U.S" and was also selected by Travel & Leisure Golf as one of "Florida's 50 Finest Courses." This is another SBMC golf experience not to be missed! So, come join your fellow SBMC members and friends for a great round of golf among the oaks and marshes. To reserve your spot(s) contact Nico Hogeveen at (904) 403-6754 or send an email to [email protected].

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT

What is JA Reverse Job Shadow?

JA Reverse Job Shadow has the look and feel of a Career Fair.  It is a four hour event starting at 12:30pm on December 11th, at Southside Middle School.

Junior Achievement needs 15 SBMC volunteers from a variety of businesses to speak with students. This will be held in the gymnasium with tables to display items related to your industry (cannot guarantee that there will be electrical outlets available).

You should expect to answer the following questions:
  1. What is your job and career path?
  2. What are other possible jobs in this career field?
  3. What are the skills and educational requirements for this job? (Will they need communication skills, writing skills, math skills, college degree, trade school, industrial certifications?)
  4. What type of background screening is required in this career field?
  5. What is the job outlook for this career? (Will there be jobs in this field when these students graduate?)
  6. What is the earning potential? (Initial salary and top end salaries.)
What are the responsibilities of the volunteer?
  • Be on time!
  • Prepare to answer the 6 questions listed and expect additional questions about your career path.
  • Bring visual aids that represent your field.
To sign up, or if you have any questions, please, contact:

SERGEANT-AT-ARMS

There are 2015 spotlight speaker dates available!  The book is at the sign-in table at each meeting.

This is free to all members in good standing and gives you the opportunity to talk about your business, family, interests, or anything else you would like to talk about for five minutes.  You are also able to put out business cards, flyers, or informational materials on the tables to showcase your business.

Pick your date before they fill up!

We also ask for volunteers to help us start our meetings to get us thinking about what is really important and what is behind whatever success we have achieved - God and Country.

If you have a calling to lead us in prayer/invocation or the pledge of allegiance, please either call or sign up in the spotlight speaker book.
