This coming Saturday marks the 239th year since the Colonies declared their independence from England.  Many of us will take to opportunity to be out on our boats, in pools, planning a party, and/or going to see the fireworks.

This is also a great time to reflect on all the events that led up to, and secured our independence.  Now, I'm not much of a reader, as my attention span for such things is minimal.  However, I have watched a couple of series about that time period.  Of course there are always 'liberties' that Hollywood takes with historical events to make them more interesting.  But, for the most part, the timelines of significant events are historically accurate.  Here's a few I would like to recommend few offerings that are worth watching, if nothing more than for general information:

John Adams.  The miniseries on HBO dealt with much of the history of events that led up to the Declaration, the war as we tried to secure France's support, and the establishment of our government.  This has a lot of American history from the early 1770's to the 1820's.

Turn: Washington's Spies.  This is a historical-fiction series in its 2nd year on AMC.  It's about America's first spies against the British during the war.  It is heavily centered on General Washington, and is a vastly different viewpoint than the John Adams series.

The Patriot. This is another historical-fiction cinematic release about the war that is from the perspective of the southern states.

Interestingly, none of these three overstep the perspectives of the other two.  So you get an overview of how this war affected everyone involved.

Not unlike other Federal holidays, it is my hope that everyone will see the true meaning as to why these dates are essential to us as a nation.  Often times, today, we do not fully comprehend the hell that our forefathers and mothers endured so that we can all enjoy the freedoms we do.

Now go out and buy some furniture, because like the holiday...this sale won't last!  Happy Independence Day, everyone!!

MONTHLY GOLF OUTING

MONTHLY GOLF OUTING FRIDAY, JULY 17th AT

OCEAN LINKS ON AMELIA ISLAND

It's time to play a far better conditioned golf course than the recent US Open at Chambers Bay. We'll be on the water as well...not the Puget Sound, but the Atlantic Ocean no less! On Friday, July 17th you'll have the opportunity to play the Ocean Links course at the OMNI Amelia Island Resort with your SBMC colleagues and friends. For only $50.00 (+tax) I expect our 32 spots to sell out very quickly. It will give you green/cart fees and range balls prior to your round. We'll have a shotgun start at 1:00PM.

Definitely worth the drive to Amelia Island, Ocean Links has nine of its holes designed by the famous Pete Dye (of Harbor Links and TPC Sawgrass fame) and the other nine by Dye-student golf architect Bobby Weed. The course goes by the mantra of "golf along lagoons, marsh wetlands and oceanfront views". Winding along a coastal Atlantic dune ridge, Ocean Links #4, #5, #6, #15 and #16 provide golfers with five oceanfront golf holes. The fairways and greens are parallel to the beach and meander through a unique coastal maritime hammock. Ocean Links has 10 holes that feature lagoons and marsh wetlands, in addition to concluding with a par 3 whose green is placed strategically in the waters of Red Maple Lake. The course winds through six miles of the natural sand dunes and seaside terrain that make Amelia Island so special. It can be said that this course offers as much a nature tour as a round of golf. This is a golf experience not to be missed!

Come join your fellow SBMC members and friends for a great round of golf on the ocean! To reserve your spot(s) contact Nico Hogeveen at (904) 403-6754 or send an email to [email protected].

SERGEANT-AT-ARMS

There are 2015 spotlight speaker dates available!  The book is at the sign-in table at each meeting.

This is free to all members in good standing and gives you the opportunity to talk about your business, family, interests, or anything else you would like to talk about for five minutes.  You are also able to put out business cards, flyers, or informational materials on the tables to showcase your business.

Pick your date before they fill up!

We also ask for volunteers to help us start our meetings to get us thinking about what is really important and what is behind whatever success we have achieved - God and Country.

If you have a calling to lead us in prayer/invocation or the pledge of allegiance, please either call or sign up in the spotlight speaker book.
