PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, which is not to be confused with Veterans Day. Memorial Day is the day to honor the men and women who died while serving our nation.  Whereas, Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Every year, the City of Jacksonville stages an emotionally moving Memorial Day Observance at the Veterans Memorial Wall.  Annie and I have attended this morning tribute, a number of times, and have seen a number of fellow SBMC members there over the years.

The Navy Band Southeast will start playing music at 8:30.  The relatively brief ceremony begins at 9, where the names of 5 local men who died in the last 12 months, will be added.  Of these men, three were in the Army, one in the Navy, and one in the Air Force.  There are always dignitaries from different military branches and elected government officials in attendance.

This is an interactive memorial wall, not unlike the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.  However, it is the only memorial wall that honors all 6 branches (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines).

So before you head out to the beach, or fire up the grill, take this opportunity to show the families of the fallen how much you appreciate their loved one's ultimate commitment to our nation.  You've walked passed this wall on your way to Jaguars or Suns games.  Now, I'm asking you to take a moment of your life to really look at the various monuments, and touch the wall.

If you are able to attend, patriotic attire is suggested; many wear their uniforms.  I also recommend bringing folding chairs and a couple of bottles of water.

MONTHLY GOLF OUTING

FRIDAY, JUNE 19TH AT DEERCREEK COUNTRY CLUB

After a very enjoyable and beneficial "Fidelity National Financial SBMC 20th Anniversary Youth Achiever Charity Golf Classic presented by Pet Paradise" (that's a mouthful), at San Jose Country Club this past Monday, it's now time for our next regular SBMC golf outing. It will be at Deercreek Country Club on Friday, June 19th, starting at 12:00 noon.

Cost per participant is $40.00 (+ tax) for green/cart fees and includes range balls for your warm-up. We'll have sequential tee times from 12:00 onwards and we have 32 spots available.

Deercreek is a member of our SBMC, so please support them by playing a round of golf. The course is familiar to many of you and was designed by Robert Miller and has been open since 1989. It's well known for its challenging carries and demanding doglegs.

Come join your fellow SBMC members and friends for a great round of golf in a unique environment! To reserve your spot(s) contact Nico Hogeveen at (904) 403-6754 or send an email to [email protected].

YOUTH ACHIEVER PROGRAM

I just want to thank...the Southside Businessmen's Club on behalf of the Pine Forest Safety Patrols.  Because of your investment into the lives of our students we have been able to send 25 patrols to Washington, DC.  Two on a complete scholarship!  None of this would have been possible without the willingness of (the)members to give of your time and expertise.  Again, thank you for all you have done for our Patrols!  Looking forward to next year!

SERGEANT-AT-ARMS

There are 2015 spotlight speaker dates available!  The book is at the sign-in table at each meeting.

This is free to all members in good standing and gives you the opportunity to talk about your business, family, interests, or anything else you would like to talk about for five minutes.  You are also able to put out business cards, flyers, or informational materials on the tables to showcase your business.

Pick your date before they fill up!

We also ask for volunteers to help us start our meetings to get us thinking about what is really important and what is behind whatever success we have achieved - God and Country.

If you have a calling to lead us in prayer/invocation or the pledge of allegiance, please either call or sign up in the spotlight speaker book.
