PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Tim Howe, President
Southside Business Men's Club
(904) 813-8950

Hopefully, you were lucky enough to have someone who helped you along in life.  Maybe it was small gesture that made a big difference.  Maybe someone spent years mentoring you to the person you are today.  Perhaps they taught you about 'life lessons', or maybe they gave you that break at work that set the pace for you.  If this happened, then you should be thankful that you were fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.

This leads me to think about a group of people that could really benefit from some good fortune...the elementary school crossing guards in our SBMC Youth Achiever Program (YAP).  These children get up earlier than their fellow students; they arrive well before the start of school and stay late in the day, ensuring the safety of the other student'-s during the ingress and egress process for car riders, walkers and bus riders.  These kids are today's school leaders, but they will be the 'movers and shakers' of tomorrow's Jacksonville!

Every year YAP helps support the Pine Forest Elementary school crossing guards.  This program recognizes and rewards these students who make a positive contribution to our community.  These kids are doing the right thing; they see the necessity and importance of their positions, and they see the positive results of their actions.  As a reward for their dedication, SBMC helps to finance their annual trip to Washington D.C.  On this trip, they get to see the sights of the National Mall and learn more about the history of our country.  These children will bring home a lifetime of memories from this excursion, and assuredly a more positive outlook on our country as a whole.

That reality is made possible, in part by those of you reading this.  You are the ones who've sponsored our Youth Achiever Program events.  You are the ones who've bought the chicken dinners.  Your contribution may appear to have been a tax write off, or a donation, but it's really an investment in these children's (and Jacksonville's) future!

Here's what you get for your sponsorship investment:

1)    Sponsors will stand up at the Wednesday meeting and introduce themselves and their businesses to the children and their parents.

2)    Sponsor's business names will be on a banner at both the Wednesday meeting and the Thursday cookout.

3)    Company names will be on every T-shirt.

4)    There will be a table at the Thursday cookout for sponsor's literature and promotional materials (that all parents will see).

5)   Lastly, your company will be advertised on the SBMC website in 2015.

I want to thank those of you who've already agreed to be a sponsor this year.  If you haven't yet made your decision, time is running out quickly!  I implore you to contact Bruce Fouraker (904) 521-8026 [email protected] or Frank Wallmeyer (904) 237-8701 [email protected] as we have to 'go to print' late Monday to be ready for this Wednesday's meeting.

Also, don't forget to purchase your Bono's chicken dinner tickets.  Remember: It's for the kids!

CIVIC AFFAIRS

It's election season and we're allowing any candidate running for office on a first-come-first-served basis to speak for 5 minutes about their campaign.  If you're supporting anyone running, please have them contact Patrick Heatherington for arrangements.....the first available is NEXT week's meeting.

MONTHLY GOLF OUTING

MONTHLY GOLF OUTING FRIDAY, MARCH 27TH AT

AMELIA NATIONAL GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

Our next Southside Business Men's Club (SBMC) golf outing will be on Friday, March 27th at Amelia National Golf & Country Club. Cost per participant is $53.00 (+ tax) for green/cart fees and includes range balls for your warm-up. We'll have a shotgun start for everyone at 11:00 AM and we have 32 spots available.

Amelia National was designed by renowned  golf course architect Tom Fazio and opened for play in 2006. No living designer has more credits on Golf Digest's list of America's 100 greatest golf courses and Amelia National follows Fazio's tradition of creating golf courses that reflect the natural beauty of their environments. This challenging course is always in excellent shape with the right amount of slope, water and sand. And the charming French Provincial clubhouse is often described as spectacular.

So, come join your fellow SBMC members and friends for a great round of golf! To reserve your spot(s) contact Nico Hogeveen at (904) 403-6754 or send an email to:  [email protected].

MEMBERSHIP

Membership

This week is the week of our monthly board meeting where we CONFIRM NEW MEMBERS!  Anyone you have interested in membership, please get them to sign up before lunch on Wednesday and their application will go before the board immediately following.  Upon approval they'll be invited to Orientation the following week where they'll learn about the club, then be inducted during the meeting.  We're going into our busy season with TPC, Golf Tournament, etc. on the horizon so it's a great time for new people to come in and get involved!  Jack Manilla of Portofino Pools has purchased Meet-a-Member ticket vouchers for EVERY new member this year to be given at orientation.  They will get to attend the MaM of their choice courtesy of Portofino Pools....as if membership didn't have enough privileges.

Now we're going even further with our semi-annual membership contest.  Whoever sponsors the most memberships in the first half of the year will receive a $500 American Express Gift Card!  This contest is retroactive to January 1 so if you've already sponsored a member, you're already in the running.  Please start inviting your friends, clients, and business associates to experience our club and all it has to offer.

Sincerely,

2015 Membership Committee

SERGEANT AT ARMS
There are 2015 spotlight speaker dates available!  The book is at the sign-in table at each meeting.

This is free to all members in good standing and gives you the opportunity to talk about your business, family, interests, or anything else you would like to talk about for five minutes.  You are also able to put out business cards, flyers, or informational materials on the tables to showcase your business.

Pick your date before they fill up!

We also ask for volunteers to help us start our meetings to get us thinking about what is really important and what is behind whatever success we have achieved - God and Country.

If you have a calling to lead us in prayer/invocation or the pledge of allegiance, please either call or sign up in the spotlight speaker book.
