PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Annie Howe, President
Southside Business Men's Club

Florida Governor Rick Scott's security detail got a little bit of a shock this past Wednesday upon their arrival at San Jose Country Club. When they saw a group of teens walking through the club's doors armed with rifles they were quick to assess the situation! Fortunately it was just the Robert E. Lee High School Navy JROTC, who came to give another fabulous presentation to our club. The rifles were unloaded, so crisis averted. It was a nice surprise that Governor Scott decided to drop by our meeting to greet the 5th Grade Safety Patrols from Pine Forest School for the Arts. I hope everyone enjoyed the brief distraction. It's not often that Gene Maszy gets upstaged during our weekly auction!

Thanks to all the volunteers that showed up at Pine Forest on Thursday to serve 450 chicken dinners in an effort to raise money for the school.  I always go home from that event feeling exhausted and fulfilled... and smelling like chicken.

If you are reading this on Sunday, I will see you in about an hour for our big annual tailgate! The weather is supposed to be BEAUTIFUL today, reminding us all as to why we all choose to live here in Jacksonville.

Go Jags!

This week we lost a dear piece of our club, and laid another to rest.

Axel von Loewenclau's service was Monday at San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church. Thank you to all of the members that attended to pay your respects. It was a lovely service and Axel will be missed.

The world lost a bright light Tuesday morning when Cheryl Volpe lost her battle with cancer. I will always remember Cheryl for her never ceasing smile and loving personality. I know she is looking down on all of us with her glass of wine, free from pain. Please keep Angelo and Jeff in your thoughts and prayers.

CHARITY CLAY SHOOT

The 1st Annual

 YAP J.R.O.T.C.

Charity Clay Shoot

To Benefit the NEW Youth Achiever J.R.O.T.C. Scholarship Fund

Saturday we had a great time at our inaugural charity clay shoot! Towards the end of the week we picked up additional shooters rounding our number out to 62 which is about 10 over a full field.  Also in the final week, Republic Services stepped up and offered to join as our ammunition sponsor further.  The weather was perfect, the course was fantastic and fun was had by all.  We're still tallying the results of our fundraising and will announce in the coming weeks.   If you attended the last 3 YAP luncheons you should recall our partnership with Robert E Lee High School's N.J.R.O.T.C. Students who came out and volunteered for the event making them the first eligible candidates for our new scholarship program.

The committee worked for months on securing sponsors, shooters, and volunteers.  Additionally this committee focused on securing funds and participants almost exclusively outside the club from future members!  This was truly a team effort in which everyone should be proud.

Finally, the event wouldn't have been half as successful if it wasn't for the support of our very own Member Duckworth Construction Company stepping in as title sponsor as well as recruiting several of the teams in attendance.  Hank, your generosity was incredibly moving and appreciated....THANK YOU for personally starting our inaugural year off right and setting the benchmark from which we'll build for years to come!

Sincerely,
The Founding Clay Shoot Committee

VETERANS DAY FLOAT
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!!!!

Construction is officially underway on the 2014 SBMC Veteran's Day Parade Float.  The float is dedicated to our nation's military service members, both active and Veterans alike, and commemorates those who have given the supreme sacrifice for this great nation.  We need your help this Tuesday evening, October 7th, at 5:30pm at 3728 Philips Highway, Suite #304, and will meet on each consecutive Tuesday evening through November 4th, same place and time.

Note this is a new and more modern location.  The site is in the Central Park Office/Industrial complex on the west side of Philips Highway just south of Emerson Street.  Here is a link:  https://goo.gl/maps/cTna5

Food and water will be provided. You are welcome to BYOB.  And bring a lawn chair if you'd like to sit for a spell.  YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VERY IMPORTANT AS THIS REQUIRES SEVERAL VOLUNTEERS EACH WEEK TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT!

If you are a veteran and would like your name in The Book Of Valor sign on the float please contact Valerie Segraves at [email protected]    Cost is $10.00 per name.

Every time you volunteer your name goes into a hat.  There will be a drawing at the end for 2 Jaguar tickets and a parking pass!!!

We are also selling shirts and hats:  1 for $15.00 or 2 for $20.00.  They will be at the meetings and at the Tuesday night float construction.

MEMBERS NEEDED BY THE END OF THE YEAR:  40

SBMC is comprised of the nicest, most fun and most loyal people I've ever had the pleasure to meet.  In order for this Club to remain dynamic, it's imperative that we all do our part to invite like-minded people to become members.

Our goal for the remainder of the year is clearly shown above.  This is a very attainable goal, but the only way that we will achieve this goal is if we all work together.   I ask that you please do your part by adding one new member by the end of the year.  Think of your friends, neighbors, customers and vendors.  In your circle of influence there is at least one person who can and will make a great new member.

As members of this great Club, we all have a responsibility to ensure that not only does it continue, but that it thrives.   I thank you all.

Frank Wallmeyer,                                                                                           Membership Chair

SERGEANT AT ARMS
Do you feel a calling to lead us in our Invocation or Pledge of Allegiance?

We ask for volunteers to help us start our meetings to get us thinking about what is really important and what is behind whatever success we have achieved - God and Country.

Please sign up or contact me if you would like to help.

We also have some openings for spotlight speaker this fall.  This is free to our members in good standing and gives you the opportunity to talk about your business, family, interests, or anything else you would like to talk about for five minutes.  You are also able to put out business cards, flyers, or informational materials on the tables to showcase your business.

Pick your date before they fill up!
