PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
Annie Howe, President
Southside Business Men's Club
(904) 654-6095
This past week, our nation reflected on one of the most tragic events to occur on American soil in living memory. We all have our 9/11 story, and mine includes a coffee shop, SBMC Member Ken Petch, and my freshman year at the University of North Florida.
While attending UNF I managed to talk my way into a job as the morning counter server at a coffee shop near the intersection of Atlantic and Hodges. The owner Martin was an Englishman, and given my birthright as a British Subject through my father that was the only reason he agreed to hire a "college kid." So I worked for Martin starting at the crack of dawn 6 days a week, and I would take my classes in the afternoon.
The morning of 9/11 was like any other, regular customers would come in bleary eyed and thirsty and I would send them on their way to enjoy their "usual." One of these regulars was a guy from New Jersey named Ken, and his "usual" was regular coffee until I introduced him to what we called a B52 Mocha. We would often see Ken's wife Linda later in the afternoon. Martin and I loved Ken, because the only thing funnier than his accent was his sense of humour.
That morning Ken came in while talking on his cell phone to someone; he hung up quickly after walking through our door. He told us that his buddy called to say that some idiot flew their plane into the World Trade Center. We chatted that it must have been some small aircraft, probably with an inexperienced pilot, and left it at that. Martin went into the office to switch the radio station to talk radio so we could hear what was happening. It was then that the second plane hit, and we realized that this was not some accident. This was something much more serious.
As we didn't have a TV in the shop, Martin and I spent the rest of my shift talking turns to go next door to the Firehouse Subs to get updates. The whole restaurant was full, even before they were really open for the day. People were just congregating around the television to get whatever information they could. At noon I headed back to campus to go to class, only to find that everything had been cancelled. So I went back to my dorm, and several of my friends joined me there. We just watched the TV, astonished that this type of thing could happen. To us. On our turf.
I quit the coffee shop a year or so later to begin my banking career and lost touch with the Petch's. Until one day about 10 years later Tim and I were at a party with Jepp and Mary Walter and I saw Ken and Linda out of the corner of my eye. As it turns out, the Walter's and the Petch's have been friends for years. Ken has since become a member of our club and is the Chairman of our Car Show this year. Jacksonville can sure be a small town when it wants to be.
Ken Petch will always be a part of my 9/11 story. The Southside Business Men's Club will always be a part my life story. Patriot Day will always be there for all Americans to remember a day when people lost their lives, but we never lost hope.

MONTHLY GOLF OUTING

SBMC MONTHLY GOLF OUTING - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th AT DEERWOOD COUNTRY CLUB
The next SBMC monthly golf outing will be at Deerwood Country Club. The date is Friday, September 26th and we'll have a shotgun start at 12:00PM. The cost is $50.00 (+ tax) per player and includes range balls.
Deerwood has seen more than 50 years of legendary golf. In 1960, golf architect George Cobb put Deerwood Country Club on the map by designing a stunning course that would eventually draw the attention of professional golfers, including competitors who came to Deerwood for the Greater Jacksonville Open (now known as THE PLAYERS Championship).
In 2004, Deerwood Country Club's entire golf facility underwent a comprehensive renovation. During this time, award-winning golf architect Brian Silva developed a brand-new, par-72 course with five sets of tees ranging from 5,228 yards for the reds to 7,261 yards for the championship tees.
We have a maximum of 36 participants. If you want to join us please contact Nico Hogeveen at 904-403-6754 or [email protected] to reserve your spot(s).
