PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
Annie Howe, President
Southside Business Men's Club
(904) 654-6095
The theme at our meeting this week appeared to be, "Small room; Big speakers." Our guest speaker was Carla Miller, Director of the Office of Ethics, Compliance, and Oversight for the City of Jacksonville. I have to admit, when she began her presentation by reading my President's Message from our website, I was pretty surprised. It is weird hearing your own words read back to you! Her point about our fathers being a part of this community really hit home to me, and I love that she still has so much hope for the future of ethical leadership in government. Anthony Butler, Sr. was another "Big Speaker" with his Spotlight this week. I really enjoyed not only his presentation, but the fact that he brought a table and a half full of guests! I hope to see many of those guests return as members.
Scott "Scooter" Schilbrack hosted a wonderful Meet-A-Member Thursday at his Luten Insurance Office. Although I am disappointed I didn't win the gift Basket from Kimberley Clarke Salon, I still had a great time networking with our members long-term and new alike. There were so many other great raffle items, and Scott is donating the raffle and ticket proceeds to the City Rescue Mission. I know they will put those funds to good use helping out our area homeless and needy.
One last plea for folks to sign up to volunteer at The Players- I will be out there Tuesday and Thursday and hope to see all of our shifts filled and commitments met. It is a lot of fun and a great opportunity for business. Other members really get to know your work ethic when they are side by side with you serving beer or manning a grill. Don't miss out on your next big opportunity.
See you at the meeting this week, when our speaker will be Terence Connor, Principal of Wolfson High School. I suspect we have many Wolfson Grads in our club, so it will be interesting to hear how the school is currently performing.

BEER FESTIVAL
|
Jacksonville Craft and Import Beer Festival
Friday, May 16th
Jacksonville Veteran's Arena
We are looking for volunteers to work at BeerFest on Friday, May 16, 2014. This is a fun event and by volunteering to work we can generate a great deal of money for our club. The event is from 5 pm - 10 pm. You can volunteer to work the entire time or just a two or three hour shift. We will take whatever time that you have available. The more volunteers that we have, the more money that is generated for our charities. Volunteers work as ID checkers, helping set up or clean up, assist as a booth attendant, oversee the silent auction, or hand out brochures and sampling glasses. None of the volunteer duties are overly strenuous so everyone can participate. You can bring your spouse or friends to work the event and all volunteers get in free. There will be about 40 different brewers with over 400 different kinds of beer and 20 restaurants represented.
If you can't volunteer your time, you can donate items for the silent auction or attend the event. If you purchase a ticket through the club, one half of the ticket price goes to the SBMC. We will circulate a sign-up book at each meeting, or you can contact the co-chairs by phone or email if you would like to help.
This year's Chair and Co-Chair for BeerFest are:
Michael Gullion [email protected] 904-396-9600, and Barry Griffin, [email protected] 904-838-8961.

FISHING TRIP
|
Let's go fishing!! This year will be our SIXTH annual fishing trip on the Mayport Princess. The trip is on June 7th, and tickets go on sale starting TODAY for only $80 per person. What does that give you, you ask? It gets you one of the just 40 spots on the boat, plus more!
Just so you know, prices on all of the Party Fishing boats in the area went up this year, so the street price is $85 per person. Well, thanks to Becky Hogan, an SBMC member and part owner of the Mayport Princess, we were able to keep the price at $80 for ONE more year!
Plus, it gets better! Compliments of our club, we also supply everyone with a really nice boxed lunch from Honeybaked Hams, bottled water, soft drinks, and BEER!! Did I say beer? Yes, we do supply beer for you.
The 40 spots sell out every year, and this year will be no exception. This trip has sold out in less than a week in the past, so don't hesitate. Either pay on our website online, or pay Dee at the door.
Don't miss the boat!!
