I have a confession to make. I was at One Spark last week and I actually got a little emotional. To see so many people crowded into Downtown Jacksonville on a Thursday night supporting local businesses and generally having a great time was nothing short of epic. As a city, I have often felt that we suffer from a big case of low self-esteem. Now I feel as though nothing could be further from the truth. There is something special happening in Jacksonville and it is palpable. One of the most special things for me was seeing the Barnett National Bank Building all lit up from the interior. It was like a shining beacon of revitalization. It occurred to me that I had possibly never in my life seen it occupied. This excitement won't be limited to Downtown, I am sure. Excitement is infectious and I look forward to seeing it spread to the Southbank and beyond.

One of my favorite events that happen on the First Coast each year is The Players. Not only is it an opportunity for our club to raise the money that funds our programs, but it's a whole lot of fun. Our speaker this week is Damon Olinto, Vice Chairman of Facilities for The Players. I am sure we are all interested to hear about the changes being made for the tournament this year. Hopefully this program will inspire our members to take a long look at the sign-up book that is passed at each meeting and SIGN UP to volunteer for the SBMC at The Players. We need your support!

BEER FESTIVAL

Jacksonville Craft and Import Beer Festival

Friday, May 16

th

Jacksonville Veteran's Arena

We are looking for volunteers to work at BeerFest on Friday, May 16, 2014.  This is a fun event and by volunteering to work we can generate a great deal of money for our club.  The event is from 5 pm - 10 pm.  You can volunteer to work the entire time or just a two or three hour shift.  We will take whatever time that you have available.  The more volunteers that we have, the more money that is generated for our charities.  Volunteers work as ID checkers, helping set up or clean up, assist as a booth attendant, oversee the silent auction, or hand out brochures and sampling glasses.  None of the volunteer duties are overly strenuous so everyone can participate.  You can bring your spouse or friends to work the event and all volunteers get in free.  There will be about 40 different brewers with over 400 different kinds of beer and 20 restaurants represented.

If you can't volunteer your time, you can donate items for the silent auction or attend the event.  If you purchase a ticket through the club, one half of the ticket price goes to the SBMC.  We will circulate a sign-up book at each meeting, or you can contact the co-chairs by phone or email if you would like to help.

This year's Chair and Co-Chair for BeerFest are: Michael Gullion [email protected] 904-396-9600, and Barry Griffin, [email protected]  904-838-8961.
