Our speaker this week was Glenn Connelly from the Jacksonville Footgolf Association. I must say, I am VERY EXCITED about playing some Footgolf in the future! It is basically golf that you play with a soccer ball and your feet. As much as I love golf, I have never put the time and money into it required to keep myself from looking like a first class failure. However, I know I can kick a soccer ball, so this is probably the sport for folks like me. I think I smell an SBMC outing in our future...

One of my favorite events of the year takes place this week; our spring Youth Achiever Program will be Wednesday and Thursday. It is always inspiring to see the safety patrol students get their certificates, and I often wonder if they really understand that it means the opportunity for a future college scholarship. These kids are our future, so please attend the meeting on Wednesday and volunteer alongside us at Beauclerc Elementary School on Thursday.

See you then!

YOUTH ACHIEVER PROGRAM

The Youth Achiever Program helps the boys and girls who serve as Southside Elementary school safety patrols, specifically those of Beaclerc with the cost of the trip to Washington DC. Then later upon applying to college, these same students are eligible to apply for our annual YAP college scholarships to the schools of their choice (usually $1,000-$1,500 depending on demand). This program is funded in part by our semi-annual Youth Achiever Program cook-outs.  The date for the Spring YAP is March 26th for the luncheon and March 27th for the BBQ at Beauclerc Elementary.

PLEASE SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER ON MARCH 27TH AT BEAUCLERC ELEMENTARY.  WE HAVE 2 SHIFTS:  12:00-4:00 AND 3:00-6:00.  WE WILL BE SETTING UP AND SERVING THE CHICKEN DINNERS.  YOU CAN SIGN UP BY SENDING ME AN EMAIL OR PUTTING YOUR NAME IN THE YAP BOOK THAT WILL BE AT THE MEETINGS.

SBMC GOLF OUTING - FRIDAY, MARCH 28th

This month's golf outing is at The Champions Club at Julington Creek on Friday, March 28th with a shotgun start at 11:30AM sharp. Easily accessible from the Southside area, this course offers a retreat to traditional designs of the past. With rolling Bermuda grass fairways wrapped around sparkling lakes and dense woods, the Championship Club offers a challenging but playable experience for the advanced and average golfer. Our rate will be $35.00 per participant (+tax), including range balls.

Please contact Nico Hogeveen at 904-403-6754 or [email protected] to reserve your spot(s) and play some golf with your SBMC friends!

BEER FESTIVAL

Jacksonville Craft and Import Beer Festival

Friday, May 16

th

Jacksonville Veteran's Arena

We are looking for volunteers to work at BeerFest on Friday, May 16, 2014.  This is a fun event and by volunteering to work we can generate a great deal of money for our club.  The event is from 5 pm - 10 pm.  You can volunteer to work the entire time or just a two or three hour shift.  We will take whatever time that you have available.  The more volunteers that we have, the more money that is generated for our charities.  Volunteers work as ID checkers, helping set up or clean up, assist as a booth attendant, oversee the silent auction, or hand out brochures and sampling glasses.  None of the volunteer duties are overly strenuous so everyone can participate.  You can bring your spouse or friends to work the event and all volunteers get in free.  There will be about 40 different brewers with over 400 different kinds of beer and 20 restaurants represented.

If you can't volunteer your time, you can donate items for the silent auction or attend the event.  If you purchase a ticket through the club, one half of the ticket price goes to the SBMC.  We will circulate a sign-up book at each meeting, or you can contact the co-chairs by phone or email if you would like to help.

This year's Chair and Co-Chair for BeerFest are: Michael Gullion [email protected] 904-396-9600, and Barry Griffin, [email protected]  904-838-8961.
