PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Annie Howe, President
Southside Business Men's Club
(904) 654-6095

Our program last week was Evie Pankok from the Duval County Extension Office. I hope you all enjoyed learning about the service and its commitment to Florida Friendly landscapes. If weeds are considered environmentally friendly, then I know my yard already qualifies!

We also had the pleasure of inducting some new members into our club. Please reach out to these new faces and really make them feel welcome. I think we all remember how it felt to be new and not know very many people. Let's make sure that feeling doesn't last for long.

This week I would like to share with you a story. Back in 2010 when I was Sergeant-At-Arms, I found myself in charge of an election to determine a new President for the SBMC. Jerry Holland, Supervisor of Elections for Duval County, offered to bring a voting machine to the club for our election so that we wouldn't have to count the votes by hand. He even included pre-printed ballots with the names of the members who were running for the open seat. It was a neat surprise for all of our members, and I have always remembered the gesture. Especially since I was a new officer and it made me look good! Jerry is our speaker at this week's luncheon, so I hope you will all come to the meeting and welcome him. Fortunately, this time he won't need that voting machine.

SBMC GOLF OUTING - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28th

This month's golf outing is at a wonderful course and tee times are going fast! The Amelia National Golf & Country Club will host us on Friday, February 28th with a shotgun start at 11:00AM sharp. This is clearly one of the best courses in the area! Amelia National was designed by world famous golf course architect Tom Fazio and the many large bunkers, wide fairways and gargantuan greens are typical of his work. Since the opening in 2006 this track has had only limited play, partly due to its high green fees (normally $150.00+). However, with the SBMC you will be able to play Amelia National at only $50.00 per participant (+tax), including range balls and bottled water on the cart.

We already have over 30 participants, but there are still a few spots left. Please contact Nico Hogeveen at 904-403-6754 or [email protected] to reserve one of them.

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY

Want to have some fun while providing an important service to your club?  Then, please join the Membership Directory Committee on Monday, March 3rd, at 5pm at the La Nopalera's Restaurant in San Marco (1631 Hendricks Avenue) for our first of three Proofing Parties performing edits on the 2014 Membership Directory.  Food and spirits will be provided.  To keep our meetings short, we need many volunteers!  So please help!   Email Rod Borom at [email protected] if you could provide a couple hours of help that evening. Bring a laptop with you, if you have one.  Thank you!

YOUTH ACHIEVER PROGRAM

The Youth Achiever Program helps the boys and girls who serve as Southside Elementary school safety patrols, specifically those of Beaclerc with the cost of the trip to Washington DC. Then later upon applying to college, these same students are eligible to apply for our annual YAP college scholarships to the schools of their choice (usually $1,000-$1,500 depending on demand). This program is funded in part by our semi-annual Youth Achiever Program cook-outs.  The date for the Spring YAP is March 26th for the luncheon and March 27th for the BBQ at Beauclerc Elementary.

This is your opportunity to make an investment in this worthy program. As SBMC members you can make a difference by getting involved. There are 3 ways to get involved you can help on the YAP committeevolunteer the day of the cookout  or Invest by
being a Sponsor in this program. Investment Sponsorships for just the spring is $125 or you can lock in a Sponsorship for both
spring and fall for just $200.  If you lock in a Sponsorship for both spring and fall you will be entered into two drawings:  one for a hole sponsorship for the YAP Golf Tournament and one for a station sponsorship for the NJROTC Clay Shoot.

PLEASE SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER ON MARCH 27TH AT BEAUCLERC ELEMENTARY.  WE HAVE 2 SHIFTS:  12:00-4:00 AND 3:00-6:00.  WE WILL BE SETTING UP AND SERVING THE CHICKEN DINNERS.  YOU CAN SIGN UP BY SENDING ME AN EMAIL OR PUTTING YOUR NAME IN THE YAP BOOK THAT WILL BE AT THE MEETINGS.

SERGEANT AT ARMS
The 2014 Spotlight Speaker Book is now available at the sign-in table.

This is your opportunity to talk about your business, family, or sell your wares for 5 minutes.

Just as a reminder, introduction of guests and thanking other members for doing business is NOT the time to sell your business or upcoming event, that's reserved for the spotlight speaker.

We also need volunteers to lead us in the Invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Pick your date before they fill up!
