PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Jepp Walter, SBMC 2013 PresidentJepp Walter
2013 President

We had Mark Middlebrook from the St. Johns River Alliance as our speaker this week, and learned a great deal about our great river, and the good and not so good things that are happening in its life.  The Alliance is a wealth of information, and also offers a rebate if we purchase one of their tags, for the difference in cost from a normal tag.

We had SBMC Trivia again, and asked the question,
"Who is the Vice President over the Meet a Member events?" The correct answer was given by our own Chairwoman Galina Schott!  Galina won a $25 Gift Card to Mitchell's Seafood.  We will do more soon, not necessarily every week.  So learn about your club!  Listen at meetings, and meet your Vice Presidents!  You can also learn the structure of our club from either our website, or the Directory, when the new one is released.

Speaking of Meet a Members, please join us Thursday for our first one of the year!  Details are below.  And I look forward to seeing you Wednesday!

SPRING YAP --- March 20th & 21st

The Youth Achiever Program helps the boys and girls who serve as Southside Elementary school safety patrols, specifically those of Beaclerc with the cost of the trip to Washington DC. Then later upon applying to college, these same students are eligible to apply for our annual YAP college scholarships to the schools of their choice (usually $1,000-$1,500 depending on demand). This program is funded in part by our semi-annual Youth Achiever Program cook-outs, and the first one is just around the corner on March 21st.

This is your opportunity to make an investment in this worthy program. As SBMC members you can make a difference by getting involved. There are 3 ways to get involved; you can help on the YAP committee, volunteer the day of the cookout 3/21/2013 or Invest by being a Sponsor in this program. Investment Sponsorships for just the spring is $125 or you can lock in a Sponsorship for both spring and fall for just $200.

CRUMP'S CORNER

Just over 12 years ago, the Southside Business Men's Club lost one of it's greatest assets. One that the club had not been without for forty-one years. The retirement of Pauline W. Smith. Pauline had served the club out of pure love.

Pauline was recruited by Harry A. Pierce during the Presidency of W.A. Weatherford in 1959. She not only did the secretarial duties but typed , edited and mailed the "Southsider weekly" newsletter. Recording minutes of all board meetings, and making sure the President did not forget anything.

In 1993 when the club voted to allow women members Pauline was the first woman member. A fitting milestone. As "one of her boys" I can truly say that I could not have done my tour of duty without the advice and gentle guidance that Pauline offered.

The club has honored Pauline with the founding of the "Pauline W. Smith" Business Scholarship in conjunction with the University of North Florida.

Your Historian,
Crump Kirby

PAULINE'S RESPONSE;
"How kind of you, Crump. I sometimes think I have been forgotten over there.  All you say in your article are true, but I remind you that my tenure was before computers, copiers, etc.  I had a routine that EVERY Friday, rain or shine, kids in or out of school, my camera-ready weekly "Southsider" had to be hand-delivered to Prosser Press on Louisa Street so that they could print and mail it.  If it was Summer and school was out, the kids went with me and we would stop by the Krystal Drive In across the St. from the Catholic School on Atlantic Blvd. and get burgers and shakes IN THE CAR, no less, delivered by a "car hop" in a uniform.  My grown children remember this as a fond memory of growing up with Mom and "The Club".  The annual Roster was HAND TYPED on my trusty Remington, a left-over from A.D. Smith days.  Does anyone remember that dear soul and good member?  Why should I not love this Club??  It has given me memories to last a lifetime!!"

Please join us in wishing Pauline a Happy Birthday this week. What a Grand Lady!

SERGEANT AT ARMS - Steve DeSorbo
