Resolution of the SBMC - Southbank Riverwalk

The following resolution has been approved by the Board of Governors and will be voted on at this week's meeting by the general membership in attendance.

WHEREAS a study was completed under the Peyton administration as to the condition of and plan for renovation of the Southbank Riverwalk

WHEREAS the study revealed the condition of the structural support to have significantly declined potentially exposing the City to a lawsuit far in excess of any renovation costs

WHEREAS much of the bulkhead in front of the adjacent properties were also revealed to be in need of maintenance

WHEREAS funds for the renovation were appropriated over 2 years ago and are already available

WHEREAS commencement of a project could utilize many Jacksonville Residents in the construction industry currently struggling for work.

WHEREAS the project would further contribute to the goal of a more active and developed downtown Jacksonville

WHEREAS the Southside Business Men's Club has a vested interest in the Southbank Riverwalk specifically in regards to our well-known involvement in Friendship Park

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Southside Business Men's Club that although we have not taken any formal position for or against any specific changes, we respectfully request the Mayor review the current Southbank Riverwalk renovation project and appoint a committee or department to consider the appropriate course of action and expedite accordingly.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed spending time with your family and friends.  I also took some time off last week and I  would like to thank our 1st Vice President Jepp Walter for running the SBMC meeting and Tom Whicher for hosting our Annual wine tasting. The Holiday Season is officially here and it is a time for special holiday activities.  For us, it means that the SBMC Children's Christmas Shopping Spree is just a few weeks away.

The SBMC Christmas charity work for disadvantaged children has been underway since the mid 1980's. We raise money throughout the year from a couple of fundraising events.  I would like to thank our Past Presidents for raising additional money at the Jacksonville Agricultural Fair in 2012.  Thanks to their hard work and dedication, this year the SBMC will treat over FORTY homeless kids from the Davis Center for Families to a shopping spree for Christmas!  Invite your family members and friends and join us for this worthwhile event!

We need over FORTY volunteers for this event on Saturday, December 15th at 8am at the Target on San Jose.  Children will be given the money, have a list for essentials to buy, and you will be escorting them as they shop for themselves and their families for Christmas. Donate your time to this very special giving opportunity and help us fulfill the kids' Christmas dreams!  You will be glad you did!  If you would like to volunteer, please contact our Chairman Gene Maszy.

Last Wednesday, the 2013 slate of officers and board members were presented to the SBMC members.  The slate, listed below, has been proposed by the nominating committee and approved by the Board of Governors and will be voted on by the general membership at the Annual Meeting on Wednesday, December 5th, 2012.
