Resolution of the SBMC - Southbank Riverwalk

WHEREAS a study was completed under the Peyton administration as to the condition of and plan for renovation of the Southbank Riverwalk

WHEREAS the study revealed the condition of the structural support to have significantly declined potentially exposing the City to a lawsuit far in excess of any renovation costs

WHEREAS much of the bulkhead in front of the adjacent properties were also revealed to be in need of maintenance

WHEREAS funds for the renovation were appropriated over 2 years ago and are already available

WHEREAS commencement of a project could utilize many Jacksonville Residents in the construction industry currently struggling for work.

WHEREAS the project would further contribute to the goal of a more active and developed downtown Jacksonville

WHEREAS the Southside Business Men's Club has a vested interest in the Southbank Riverwalk specifically in regards to our well-known involvement in Friendship Park

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Southside Business Men's Club that although we have not taken any formal position for or against any specific changes, we respectfully request the Mayor review the current Southbank Riverwalk renovation project and appoint a committee or department to consider the appropriate course of action and expedite accordingly.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I am reminded that our club has much for which to be thankful: we have had a very successful and productive year and have accomplished a great deal.  Despite of an unsteady economy and challenges, we continue to grow and prosper.

Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to gather together and express gratitude for all that we have been given, the freedoms we enjoy, and the loved ones who enrich our lives.

Thanksgiving is also a time to be thankful for our blessings and I am grateful to you for your support of the SBMC this year. Thank you for contributing your time, talents and resources to our club!  It is inspiring for me to see how many SBMC members work together to support the club and help make Jacksonville a better place to live and work.

Happy Thanksgiving to my SBMC family!  I wish each of you a joyous and peaceful Thanksgiving.  Please enjoy the company of your loved ones, have good cheer, be safe and take time to reflect on your blessings.

Quote of the week: "Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds." - Theodore Roosevelt

MEET-A-MEMBER - Florida Backyard

Our last 2012 Meet-A-Member event hosted by Sabrina Ebel with Florida Backyard last Thursday was a great success. Our members and guests had a wonderful time networking, enjoying delicious foods and beverages, and learning more about Sabrina's family business Florida Backyard. Thank you, Sabrina for donating the proceeds of the ticket sales to our Children's Christmas Shopping Spree!

SBMC Children's Christmas Shopping Spree
Our Annual Children's Christmas Shopping Spree benefiting the

underprivileged kids and their families will be December 15th.  We will be auctioning 3 very nice Taylor made leather, swivel chairs during the meetings on 11/28, 12/5 and 12/12.  Click here  to view more details about the chairs; they are valued at $1,200 to $2,400.

A special thank you to Mark Manship for donating these chairs to raise money for our club's event.  We appreciate Mark's generosity and encourage all members to bring special items to auction during our meetings. Help us raise additional money to benefit more families!

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

As we near the end of the year, we look back at what our club has accomplished and forward to our finishing it on a bang! SBMC is also a social club and we have many fun and worthwhile activities around the holidays. What better time for you to introduce your friends and associates to our club. Bring them to a meeting and encourage them to bring a friend or an auction item as great ways to get more exposure sooner.

Invite them to come along to one of our socials and help them make a few connections and feel ingratiated. By helping them feel the warmth of our group you'll be helping them see the value of membership. Each new member boosts us towards our goals of improving Jacksonville, building our businesses and, never forget, having a lot of fun doing it.

I look forward to meeting and including your friends soon.

2012 Membership Chair

SBMC Holiday Gala and 80th Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday, December 8th, we are celebrating not only the

Holiday Season but also our Club's 80th Anniversary.

Our evening at the Aetna Building kicks off with cocktails and hor d'oeuvres served against the backdrop of the sparkling St. Johns River at 6:30pm, with dinner catered by Anthony's at 8:00 pm.

The band Cloud 9 will provide the musical treat for the evening

and we can dance until midnight.

Tickets are only $60 per person which includes cocktails, open bar, great food and dancing. Our beautiful destination will be a wonderful place to dress up and celebrate!  Tickets are limited,

buy your tickets on line at www.sbmcjax.com or at the meeting.

We have also made arrangements for an $89.00 room rate at Hilton Garden Inn. The hotel is conveniently located a few blocks from our event and would be a great place to conclude a perfect evening.
