PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As I was getting ready for the SBMC activities this week, I remembered that Sidney Sheldon once said "My heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place -- police, firefighters, and members of our armed forces."

Our 2012 Veterans Day weekend has been truly wonderful!  Yesterday, we began celebrating great service men and women with our 2nd Annual Salute event at the Jacksonville Landing.  The music, weather, food and refreshments were great and enjoyed by many in attendance. Many thanks to the event Chairman Gene Maszy and all our sponsors and volunteers for organizing such an exciting event. Because of their support, we have raised money for the SBMC Veterans Independence Project.

On Monday, November 12th, we will be participating in the Jacksonville Veterans Day parade proudly displaying our wonderfully redesigned 80th Anniversary Veterans' Day Float. On Veteran's Day we honor those who have bravely served our country and I hope you will come out and join us for the parade. What a great way to honor America's Veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

This Wednesday, is our Annual Police and Fireman of the Year Day. This is always a special meeting for us when we present awards to a local fireman and a local policeman in recognition of their outstanding service to the community. Please plan to attend this week's meeting as we honor our police and firefighters. I look forward to seeing you there.

Quote of the week: "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." - John F. Kennedy

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

Happy Veterans Day! Thank you to all who have served our great country. SBMC members proudly pledge allegiance to the flag before each meeting, and honor veterans with military appreciation day, a float in the Veteran's Day parade, and an event called Salute at the Jacksonville Landing. There are many other fun activities, ways to give back to the community, and opportunities to build friendships and business relationships--the things that make SMBC membership so worthwhile.

Membership is having a great year; please continue to invite guests to the meetings and encourage your colleagues and contacts to consider joining. Remember, we're running a contest for the member who can sponsor the most new members, with a $1,000 cash prize to the winner at the end of the year. There's never been a better time to be a member of the oldest and arguably most prestigious civic organization in Jacksonville!

Julie Wesling,

2012 Membership Co-Chair

CRUMP'S CORNER - HISTORY of the SBMC

I was only 8 years old, but the work was completed in 1963.

I remember that...

Fifty-two years ago a meeting was held at the Green Turtle Restaurant.  The Southside Business Men's Club approved a resolution urging the State Road Department (later absorbed into the Florida Department of Transportation) to widen Hendricks Avenue from San Jose Boulevard to Lakewood.

Dated March 5, 1958 and signed by then President John C. Coleman.
