Moving Mountains

Well, they say you can't move mountains, but Sheila Kay Adams - ballad singer, storyteller, author and recording artist - has certainly moved the Appalachian Mountains into the greater American consciousness. Last week the National Endowment for the Arts named Sheila a recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship, recognizing her artistic excellence and contributions to our nation's traditional arts heritage. I am so proud of my long time friend!  And I am delighted that honoring Sheila Kay also shines the light on Appalachian culture and storytelling.

This is how I remember Sheila when we first met back in the mid-seventies.

Beautiful Connections

What better metaphor for the interconnectedness of us all than a string of beads? For the Ugandan women who are part of BeadforLife, the colorful jewelry rolled from recycled paper is an income stream for food, medicine, housing, school fees, and hope.

"Webale nyo" (thank you) to all the venues that welcome me to bring the jewelry as a part of my storytelling performances and workshops.  This year we have raised $9,890 in just 4 months!  We are all beads on this beautiful, tenuous, and infinite string called life.

Every bead tells a story. Recently my friend Janet bought a bracelet and necklace for her new granddaughter and said, "Elyse, your first beads! May you feel the beauty of this connection to others, now and throughout your life."
