Top European Pathologist Joins RUSVM to Lead New Postgraduate Degree Programs

   

RUSVM announced the appointment of Dr. Sean Callanan as director of postgraduate studies, who will oversee RUSVM's first postgraduate degree programs focused in research. RUSVM has been awarding veterinary medicine degrees since 1982 and will now expand its programs to include master's and doctoral degrees. |More|

On January 6 RUSVM welcomed the class of 2017 at its traditional White Coat Ceremony. This ceremony takes place at the beginning of every semester and is symbolic of the students' entry not only into veterinary academic studies but also into the veterinary profession. |More|

Inaugural Student Research Day - A Great Success

 

At the core of RUSVM mission is our commitment to research. On Friday January 24, RUSVM faculty, staff, and students packed into the Student Union to witness the students demonstrate their research knowledge, skills and accomplishments on various topics as part of Student Research Day. The day featured 26 poster presentations prepared by students, with the support of faculty mentors providing informative and interactive sessions. All of the research themes were well-represented and new ideas and technologies were shared.  |More|

Renowned Researcher in Debilitating Parasitic Disease To Lead Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine's New One Health Research Center 

 

RUSVM announced today the appointment of Dr. Arve Lee Willingham as its first director of One Health Center for Zoonoses and Tropical Veterinary Medicine. The center focuses on zoonotic and other diseases affecting livestock production and public health, using the One Health approach. The One Health approach, as defined by the American Veterinary Medical Association, encourages the collaborative efforts of multiple disciplines working locally, nationally and globally to attain optimal health for people, animals and our environment. |More|

Keeping it in the Family - Sisters Nurture Passion for Medicine

      

Abbie and Holly Mincks both developed a fascination for science when their paternal grandfather, a retired surgeon, began giving them anatomy lessons on the Thanksgiving turkey. Then when their maternal grandparents became ill and moved in with them, the sisters witnessed firsthand the time and compassion that health professionals show in times of crisis. This time in their young lives planted a seed that would grow into a passion to care for and help others. |More|

Exploring Small Animal Veterinary Acupuncture Certification

Acupuncture is over 2,000 years old and in the last fifty years it has made its way into veterinary medicine. I originally became interested in small animal acupuncture after attending several lectures held by RUSVM's International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM) club. During these lectures, certified veterinary acupuncturists discussed the basic foundation and approach to acupuncture and why veterinarians today are using it on animals. |More|

Don't call them 'Doctor': A Yankee's View of a Scottish Externship

If James Herriot was just starting his veterinary career today, he might well be doing it in Scotland and encountering many of the same kinds of stories so many of us know and love. Fundamentally there really are very few differences between how the veterinary profession is practiced across the Atlantic Ocean compared to the United States, especially when comparing city to city practices and rural to rural practices. There are, however, a few that deserve to be mentioned and I will discuss these in more detail. |More|

Incident Report System

 

The Incident Report System provides individuals with direct access to current incidents as reported to campus security.  The system is available via the Internet (on- and off-campus) with a RUSVM email account and password.   Make it a habit to stay up-to-date.

RUSVM New Research Centers
RUSVM's Research Centers advance the productivity and standing of research and research training, supporting a research-informed educational program for our students. 

 There are four centers:
  • The One Health Center for Zoonoses and Tropical Veterinary Medicine
  • The Center for Integrative Mammalian Research
  • The Center for Conservation Medicine and Ecosystem Health
  • The Center for Research and Innovation in Veterinary and Medical Education

The portfolio of our Centers project RUSVM's strategic intent of research excellence and contribute to the research culture of RUSVM, including training and mentoring postgraduate and doctor of veterinary medicine students. 

Each Center comprises a group of leading researchers working collaboratively in a clearly defined field of inquiry.

Dr. Diana Scorpio joins RUSVM as Associate Professor of Veterinary Medicine. Scorpio received her DVM degree from Michigan State University and her MPH degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and is boarded in Lab Animal Medicine.  She comes to RUSVM from the University of California, Davis National Primate Research Center and the National University of Singapore as Head of Veterinary Services. Scorpio is active in many professional organizations, including the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) and the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).  She continues to collaborate with investigators at Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, and at several other biomedical institutions. In her new role, Scorpio will teach Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology to semester 3.

 

  


  

Dr. Fortune Sithole joins RUSVM as Assistant Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology. Sithole received his BVSc from University of Zimbabwe and MSc in Veterinary Epidemiology from Utrecht University.  He received his PhD in Veterinary Epidemiology, from University of Prince Edward Island. Sithole is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM).  His primary interests are Food Safety, Risk Assessment, Syndromic Surveillance and Public Health Policy. In his new role, Sithole will primarily teach Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology to Semester 4.

 

 

Dr. Chaoqun Yao joins RUSVM as Associate Professor of Parasitology. Yao received his MD from Tongji Medical University and his PhD in Veterinary Parasitology from University of Georgia. In his new role, Yao will primarily teach Parasitology to semester 2.

 
  

  

  

    

Ms. Ruth Braganza joins RUSVM as Research Administrator. Braganza received her BSc from King's College University of London, and her MSc in Medical Molecular Biology from University of Westminster.  She comes to RUSVM from Novartis in Basel, Switzerland where she was the Clinical Trials Head in Oncology. In her new role, Braganza will support the Associate Dean for Research by identifying and developing funding proposals and collaborations, and maximizing the opportunities for students to become more involved in research projects. She is also tasked with maintaining records of financial expenditure and research outputs to ensure that RUSVM continues to meet the requirements for  funding and accrediting bodies. Braganza will be instrumental in the establishment of an RUSVM Institutional Review Board (IRB) to oversee the conduct and safety of research activities conducted in humans.  

 

  

Ms. Nathalie Mather-L'Huillier joins RUSVM as Postgraduate and Research Administrator. Mather-L'Huillier earned her BSc in Toxicology from Edinburgh Napier University, and PhD in Molecular Physiology from University of Edinburgh.  She comes to RUSVM from the University of Edinburgh where she held the position of postgraduate research admissions and recruitment manager. In her new role, Mather-L'Huillier will lead the postgraduate & research administrative team in support of the strategic goals of RUSVM to expanding the research and postgraduate programs. She will be instrumental in the development and delivery of research and taught postgraduate programs as well as in obtaining full accreditation for RUSVM postgraduate programs from the St Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Education.

  

  

 

Mr. Jaime McCall has been promoted from Lab Services Technician Trainee to Lab Services Technician. In his new role, McCall will be responsible for carrying out lab services including Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Parasitology, Urinalysis, Cytology, Microbiology, Serology, Research and Student Labs.

 

  

 

 

Ms. Patrice Bernier has been promoted from Lab Services Administrative Assistant to Lab Services Technician Trainee. In her new role, Bernier will assist in conducting tests including Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Parasitology, Urinalysis, Cytology, Microbiology, Serology, Research and Student Labs.

 

  

 

 

   

Ms. Shamara Welcome joins RUSVM as a Lab Services Technician. Welcome is a graduate of the University of Manchester, England where she obtained her Master's in Biochemistry. She has a strong interest in research. In her new role, Welcome will be responsible for carrying out  diagnostic and research testing; and providing assistance in the set up and breakdown of student labs.

  

 

 

 

 

Mr. Kadeen Tyson joins the Veterinary Clinic as a Veterinary Technician Trainee. Tyson has previous experience working with dogs and monkeys at the Biomedical Research Foundation here in St. Kitts. In his new role, Tyson will be supporting the faculty and students in large animal surgery labs as well as small animal surgical cases in the clinic.

 

 

 

 

Mr. Serfert Vaughan has been promoted from Campus Patrol to Mobile Patrol Specialist I. In his new role, Vaughan will primarily be responsible for providing timely emergency response to members of the RUSVM community around the island.

  

  

 

  

  

Ms. Alicia Gaffney joins RUSVM as Registered Veterinary Technician. Gaffney comes to RUSVM from San Francisco where she was a Veterinary Technician at the Marina Pet Hospital and more recently a Vet Tech and Safety Manager at San Mateo Animal Hospital. Gaffney will be with RUSVM for one year working with hospitalized cases in the ICU, supporting the clinicians in daily appointments and assisting students whenever needed. Gaffney is also skilled in dental prophylaxis and phlebotomy.

 

 

  

 

Mr. Jeremy DeRicco joins RUSVM as Researcher and
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Administrator. DeRicco completed his BS in microbiology and later obtained a MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He spent five years in basic research in vascular molecular biology and small animal research and has four years' experience as a Training and Compliance Coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh. In his new role, DeRicco will provide operational, administrative and database management support services to the Research Department, as well as oversee and coordinate IACUC compliance activities.

 

  

  

Ms. Laurie Roberson joins RUSVM as Clinical Affairs Administrative Assistant. Roberson completed her B.S. in Agricultural Communications from Oklahoma State University, and a M.A. in Liberal Arts from Baker University before completing her Ed.S. in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Technological University. Roberson has experience in various areas of university academic affairs including academic advising, recruiting, retention, diversity and study abroad programs, residential life with learning communities, peer mentor programs, student organizations, summer orientation and student leadership development. In her new role, Roberson will work directly with the Associate Dean for Veterinary Clinical Affairs, assisting with placements and serving as the first point of contact for RUSVM clinical students. 

 

  

  

  

Mr. Matt Haga joins RUSVM as Director of Information Technology (IT). Haga has been working in the technology industry since 1995. His background includes consulting, network engineering, security auditing, database development, systems administration and IT leadership/management. Haga received his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from Emory & Henry College and holds several IT certifications including MCSE, Security+, CCNA, and CCAI. In his new role, Haga will be responsible for overseeing all divisions of IT including infrastructure, application development, and technology support. Haga will work closely with the campus leaders and the CIO of DeVry Medical International to develop and implement an annual business plans and a long-term strategic IT vision.

    

 

 

Ms. Michaela Witcher joins RUSVM as Anesthesia Technologist. Witcher joins RUSVM from Bel Rea Institute of Animal Hospital in Denver Colorado having had more than ten years of clinical instruction experience. In her new role, Witcher will primarily teach pre-clinical veterinary students the fundamentals in small and large anesthesia through both live animal and simulation labs. In addition she will take on the role as a clinic anesthetist providing anesthesia support to our community practice and specialty services.

Congratulations to Dr. Elpida Artemiou, who has successfully completed her PhD in Medical Education from the University Ambrosiana. Artemiou's thesis focused on Web-Based Learning and Simulated Client Raters: Developing Educational Trends that Inform Veterinary Communication Curricula.

 


     


     

    Double congratulations are in order for Dr. Mauldin Pereirawhose manuscript, Assessment of a Novel Method for Teaching Veterinary Parasitology was accepted for publication in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education (JVME).  Pereira was also selected as a 2014 Faculty Excellence Award recipient as part of the TEACH Awards Program, DeVry Education Group's most prestigious recognition program for colleagues.

     

     

      

     

    Dr. Larry Betance, Community Practice Chief of Staff and Assistant Professor of Small Animal Surgery, has successfully completed his ESME certificate in Medical Education. Congratulations!

    RUSVM is pleased to announce that Stephen Jenkins has been selected for the 2014 RUSVM Merial Student Scholarship. Jenkins joins RUSVM from the University of California, where he gained hands-on experience as an Animal Technician, before progressing to Junior Specialist.  With an interest in the genetic basis of disease, and an enthusiastic approach to research, Jenkins will work alongside Drs. Kelly and Scorpio in the study of Ehrlichia Canis persistence in chronic subclinical infections.  Congratulations Stephen,  wishing you every success in your research!
