What's Happening in the Library

Farewell

Judith Kiely, our extraordinary colleague, is no longer working at the library. Her last day was June 8. Judith's accomplishments are innumerable. She was mastermind of the library's digitization project; engineer of our online catalog (an enormous feat of organization and deployment of expertise); a financial whiz; intrepid researcher; creative problem-solver; patron favorite; and, not least, a treasured, supportive, and beloved friend. We are grateful for her many years of service, and we miss her.

Visitors
Summer brings visitors from near and far to the library. Some are new to our work; others are patrons from out-of-town eager to see the library in person. Last week, we had a special visit from one of the founders of a Waldorf school in Taiwan, Siao-jhen, who's been working with our neighbor, David Anderson, of Walking the Dog Theater. She was amazed to see our extensive collection, and charmed by our beautiful building and woodsy location.

New Books & More

Scharmer book
Leading from the Emerging Future: From Ego-System to Eco-System Economies. Applying Theory U to Transforming Business, Society, and Self. Otto Scharmer and Katrin Kaufer, Berrett-Kohler, 2013, 304 pgs.
Why do we collectively create results nobody wants? The authors observe that we tend to react against the patterns of the past (which usually means perpetuating them) rather than leaning into the future that wants to emerge through us. This book is a guide to transforming our outmoded reactions. The author's Theory U and Presence are also available from the library.

Mood of the Fifth book cover The Mood of the Fifth: A Musical Approach to Early Childhood. Nancy Foster, WECAN, 2013, 166 pgs.
Most Waldorf teachers and many parents of young children know that music in the "mood of the fifth" is important in early childhood: but why? Here, master teacher Nancy Foster and others demystify this topic in an array of enlightening essays. The library also has other valuable books by Nancy Foster.

Holdrege book Thinking Like a Plant: A Living Science for Life. Craig Holdrege, Lindisfarne, 2013, 224 pgs.
Plants are dynamic and resilient, living in intimate connection with their environment. This book presents an organic way of knowing modeled after the way plants live. When we slow down, turn our attention to plants, study them carefully, and consciously internalize the way they live, a transformation begins. Our thinking becomes more fluid and dynamic; we realize how we are embedded in the world; we become sensitive and responsive to the contexts we meet; and we learn to thrive within a changing world. These are the qualities our culture needs in order to develop a more sustainable, life-supporting relation to our environment. (from the back cover).
See other books, book chapters, and articles by Craig, also available from the library.

These are just a few of the new titles listed in our
